Sennheiser x Massdrop HD6XX Review / Preview - Head-Fi TV

I have been thoroughly enjoying my HD6xx. Using with a dragonfly black and couldn't be happier. I also have a Centrace Dacmini and will soon spend some time with it and the HD6xx's. Wow these are a great value. With the dragonfly, MacBook, and some lossless I think it's one of the best setups value wise, but that's just my opinion. Still wish I had my LCD2's to do a back to back but oh well.

Yes I too am enjoying my HD6XX along with Mimby and Project Ember.

Anyone have a suggestion for a replacement cable, that will hold up better then the stock cable?
Can you define “hold up”? I never used mine as I purchased a HD650 Cable from Senn and reterminated it balanced. If you want a simple back up cable, I can sell you my 6xx Cable. pM if interested.

If you want to buy a third party Cable, man, there are tons of options depending on your price point.

The official HD650 Cable is $11 from Senn, when they have them in stock.

I have a beautiful braided cable for the 6XX (and the HD700) from Ursine Audio. Undoubtedly higher quality than the stock cable and looks and feels infinitely better. It may even sound a bit better (I'm undecided on this, but the sound improvement is minor at best). But although it's less expensive than many high end aftermarket cables, it's not cheap. Depending on various options, a four foot cable (the perfect length for me) will run $100-$150, more if you need more length. And you have to be patient since Ursine is a one man operation. The web site says 2-6 weeks; my experience says more like 6-8 weeks.

Shane, seems like we are in very similar boats. I got a Pico Power for the 6XX, one of the only portable amps that has enough current to do it justice. Turns out it's just not as good for the rock and metal I listen to the most.
As far as Grados go, to me there was an audible difference between the 225i and 225e - the e series really takes away that fatiguing quality and adds some good quality bass.

I am in this boat too, I respect the HD6xx, but it is just not good for the music I listen too, especially rock. I look forward climbing up the Grado tree. I might keep the HD6xx for pop and rap, but I might try to find something more suitable.

I have four sets (plus an old set of Bose NC for travelling) and I just can't imagine keeping four sets in the long term. Ideally, it would be one set of open back (it really is a better, 'fuller" sound, IMO) and one set of closed back for work, on the go and my sometimes noisy home environment. Three might be more realistic with a yearly "research purchase".

So...at the risk of derailing this thread, what is the HD 6xx of closed back headphones? What I mean is something that encompasses all of the value points of the Senns which seem to kind of do it all. Obviously there are outliers, by the vast majority of folks here and elsewhere see the HD 6xx as a near end point headphones for most folks and available at a true blue value price to boot. Is there anything in the closed back field that even approaches this kind of consensus?

Pointed at MWSVette

Wow! You are REALLY committed.
Don't you find that there are just HP's you don't use anymore?

I have a little set up by the lazy boy with four pairs of HP's, an amp and all the assorted wiring. It is a mess and a pain in the butt.

The HD-6XX are a set of keepers for me too.

As far as the wife, you could very carefully ask how many purses and pairs of shoes she has...

I'd totally get rid of headphones that I wouldn't like to use... if it wouldn't be such a shore to get rid of 'em. I could bin my Superluxes and I wouldn't miss my K712 Pros. I'm still searching proper upgrade path from HD 595. If HD 660 S was cheaper and if it had more HD 59x style sound stage...
