Sennheiser vs Grado vs Alessandro

The HD555 to my ears will almost certainly sound boring and the MS1 are reputed to be much better sound for the pound than the SR-60. If you're asking because you're thinking of buying one, then the DR-150 also fits into the price range and might give you the best of both worlds.

Depends on what sound and price you prefer and can get them at respectively.

I listen to hip hop/rock mostly and budget is up to $200.

I have never heard an SR60, but I have heard the HD555 and I own the MS-1. I auditioned some HD555s at a local shop and I wasn't impressed. It could have been a number of factors such as the source, songs, or the situation, but I found them a bit too dark with fatiguing highs. I should have brought my MP3 player with me to try out.

After that little trip I went ahead and bought some MS-1s. I didn't know what they would be like, but I thought to an extent that I couldn't go wrong. It took me some time to get used to them, and I really needed the reversed 414 pads and beyer dt770 headband to really love them. I find them controlled and musical, with "just the right" amount and quality of bass.

Try to audition phones if you can. That is the best way to tell what is best for you.

I could never quite get comfortable with Grados, so I'm not sure how much that factors in for you. Depends on your taste in music, and how you like it presented. Grados definitely will get your foot tapping more for sure though. I owned the HD595 (HD555's bigger brother) and the SR60. At the time, I preferred the SR60. The MS-1 is said to be less harsh. G'luck!

I love the MS2i, really like the SR-60 and was not really impressed by the higher senns (600 and 650) and the HD497...so my vote would be for the MS1

...but I'm not sure at all if this is a decent hip-hop choice

Definitely the MS-1. I've owned the SR-60's and they are great, but the MS-1 has all that they can provide and more.

I thought Grado made the Alessandros - the price is pretty much the same so whats the difference SR60 / MS1 ?

the difference is that the MS1 is better than the SR60's by far. and no the price is NOT pretty much the same. MS1's are $99. They are better in every way. I don't have time to discuss it in detail...but...they are just better in every way than the SR60's.

£20 isn't a big difference - if the MS1s are all that.

A fairer comparison might be the SR80 which I can get in the UK rather importing Alessandro. Useful opinions anyone?
