For full size headphones, I generally avoid Sennheiser, but for portable headphones driven from my IPod or Bithead, for some reason I love the Sennheiser PX-100. And I just got a hold of the new version, the PX100-II. These have small drivers that rest on-the-ear (not around the ear), but they do not sound like portable phones. Very high resolution, deep bass, and sweet mids and highs. I got them from JR for $75 and free shipping.

Headroom's description says they are about the best available in this category (portable phones under $100). I believe it.

Thanks Mike. Can you say anything about any differences in sound between the former and new model? I've been resisting buying the new one for months, but your post is weakening my resolve.

I don't have access to my PX-100's to compare, unfortunately, but from my memory, it sounds like the new version has a little more bass, deeper bass, and a fuller, more high-resolution midrange... basically to the extent the original already sounded like full sized phones, they are more so.

After a lot of listening, I have noticed a problem. They have a large mid-bass (or low midrange) peak that can be a bothersome coloration depending on the type of music. But I don't sense any resonance or coloration in the mids or highs.

Interesting. I'm pretty sure I remember at least one other person noting a mid-bass peak.

I have the PX-100's, the PX-100 ii's, and in the past I owned the HD-238's.

My impression of the ii's vs the original PX-100's is similar: the ii's have more of a mid-bass peakiness than the PX-100's do.  But I also feel the PX-100's bass is a little too ripe as well.  For that reason, I like the PX-100's the best, but I do EQ out the bass from these ones.  But after doing that, they have a really well balanced detailed sound to them.

The HD-238's ...  I really wanted to like these.  Upscale vs the 100's.  But I didn't like them at all.  I feel the bass from these is even "worse" than the PX-100 ii's.  Way too bassy.  Plus, they have the pleather coverings over the ear housings.  I only used these for 60-90 min at lunch, and my ears got way too hot and sweaty even in just that short amount of time.  The PX-100's are simply just more comfortable for me.  There isn't a heckuva a lot of difference between the PX-100's and the ii's as far as construction, but I also feel the PX-100's are more comfortable over extended periods than the ii's are too.

Dumped the 238's a while back, and I plan to dump the ii's too, and just keep the original PX-100's.

Not to threadjack, but ...  BS222- I noticed in your sig that you don't have the PX-100 ii's any longer.  I just became aware of the EQ RP-21's, and I need to learn more about them ...

@meltie

If you like your PX100s and they end up breaking, getting the PX100-II would be a fine choice as replacement and a smaller step-up.
But if you are looking for a bigger upgrade, I suggest getting a different headphone.

@Kevin Brown

I can PM u about the RP-21s if you want. I wanted to make an impressions thread on them, but there are already a bunch on head-fi u can check out.
