But the amp was a small plastic box with a cheep wall wart, these cans needed something better

The HEV-70 amp is actually in an extruded aluminum case with a cheap wall wart. I like the sound of amp once it's warmed up, and when fed from a HeadRoom Max for crossfeed.

The problem with building an amp for the HE-60 phones is finding something to mate to its totally non-standard connector. It's different from even the HE-90 Orpheus phones.

Jatinder,

I strongly suspect that the extended frequency response of the Orpheus is one of the reasons for it sounding so effortlessly natural.

Doesn't this depend on the source having suprasonic content? Until DVD-A and SACD, to a limited extent, I don't think this was possible.

Many people say that vinyl and other analog sources can replay high-freq harmonics - up to 30KHz for vinyl is what I've heard from various manufacturers of super-tweeters.

Hmm its over a year I had them, so the box is aluminum? I remember it was disappointing for the price with cheap RCAs.It was obvious that the cans were classy and the amp was letting them down.A new version with a improved amp would be interesting

I've heard those claims, too, but unfortunately, the claims don't hold any water when scrutinized more closely.

I think we should let "Nik" the R10 w/ the R10H guy about the availibility of the Orpheus. He might can buy one and give us the best headphone review ever, R10 VS Orpheus.

The Big O is as perfect a headphone system as you can get, I just thought however that the bass of the blockhead was better. However, the source was tubed as well, so maybe that had something to do with it (slighty sloppy bass due to too much tubeness).

Halcyon,

no doubting your claims, but what scrutiny are you referring to?

Basic physics, like the amount of HF material actually recorded, the amount actually transferred to vinyl, the response of the cartridge, the preamp, amp, etc. The noise and distortion of the vinyl medium, especially at suprasonic frequencies.
