Sennheiser IE80's Impressions Thread

Might have to sell both to get them then.

Ie800 sounds very different.

It is the top of sound, for me it is stop from searching anything in ear anymore.

If I would now want a pair of headphones over the ear too, Ie800 would be enough to not want anything anymore in audio. Ie8/80 with very heavy EQ comes at 70% of ie800. My ultrasone dj one pro with a lot of added treble and mid treble comes at 80% of ie800. But the sound of ie800 is just mind blowing. Sennheiser created something completley different with this IEM.

You can read this thing, to get an ideea of the sound:

http://www.head-fi.org/products/sennheiser-ie800/reviews/13293

But for the price point, ie8/80 are a very good deal too. In fact, if one does not want to spend more than 300$-350$, ie8/80 would be end game there. Ie800 is around 700$ new and can be found for 550-600 second hand, sometimes even as low as 500$.

Just to provide a second opinion on SpinFits and no offense to anyone who hears differently, but ime they're among the worst tips I've ever tried (and I've tried a lot).

YMMV.

Can you please tell me what you don't like about them? I am waiting for my IE80 to arrive, and from reading all the reviews about the stock tips/fit etc I was hoping the Spinfits might offer a better, deeper fit

Better wait till they arrive before you order other tips, I didn't find any problem with stock silicone mid size tips, they fit perfect and give a decent seal, and deeper the seal more mid bass you'll get, which probably isn't the best thing you could do with IE80.

Thanks for the 'tip' . You're right, I should just wait and try the stock ones first

Their extremely thin silicone may feel comfy for some, particularly those with narrow ear canals. But that's about all pros I can acknowledge. With larger ears, it's simply too thin for a secure fit and tends to warp inside the ear. On top of that, their "spin" mechanism is an unnecessary gimmick (that doesn't even work on my pairs). But worst of all, their inner tube has a built-in constriction that impairs treble extension (google for "reverse horn effect") and makes them sound more diffuse than regular tubes.

I wrote a few posts on them, in case you're interested: e.g. here and here.

Thanks for your input - I have only read positive reviews, but you make a good point. For my ears I always use the small tips, so I'm wondering how the IE80 will fit.....

Wow,

Sennheiser stuff are really cheap over here in SK for some reason. IE80 is 225USD and IE800 is 650USD. Both are sold by authorized sellers and ship with certificates of authenticity.

HD800 is 1200, but for some reason HD700 is 630.

South Korea. And I doubt they'd offer international shipping. Sorry, yeah, I forget that South Korea is actually ROK.

Thaaaanks, @Kwangsun

Hmmm, I should ask my South Korean neighbours when they visit home.

Many thanks,
K

Did anyone hear both IE80 and Sony Z5

Does Z5 have bigger soundstage (IE80 has massive)?
Does it have more lower sub bass (that feel more than punch)?
How is mid bass (IE80 are a bit bloated and veiled, at ~150 Hz)?
How does highs compare since from what I understood both are somewhat bright but not sibilant?

Ie80 is not bright by far. More like very smooth, like hd650. I do not think that there is anything that is smoother than Ie80 on treble,. It is never sibilant.

I cannot comment on Z5.

Of course it is bright (treble, not sound signature as whole). Not too bright and highs are not too emphasized but it's on the bright side, it's V shaped sound, treble is more emphasized in comparison to mid range (not much because highs are bright but more because mids are bit recessed, still brighter sounding treble because of that).

...or we have extremely different understanding of bright treble. Only higher treble was with Sony EX700lp I've heard, but those were sibilant.

Anyways, if anyone heard both IE80 and Sony XBA-Z5 brief comparison would be very much appreciated!
