I appreciate my IE8's so much, I decided to get them balanced....
 

 


 
Cable is a Toxic Cables Viper ( SPC )
Amp and DAC are fully balanced iBasso Pelican & Boomslang II.
 
This really, And I mean REALLY opens the IE8's soundstage wide open!
Bass is far tighter and highs are still nice and crisp. 
But that soundstage opening up really changes the IE8 from a good robust IEM into an even greater open and very accurate  IEM.

The Sennheiser IE8i mic actually works on the AT&T LG G3 if anyone was wondering. The volume buttons do not but you can talk into the mic and hear with no problems. The center button hangs up.

May depend on what hardware you are using. I always had to EQ my IE8 out of a DAP, but from a dedicated DAC/Amp it always sounded great. I used NuForce and CEntrance.

Yes. Be prepared to use EQ on them though.

Thanks, ordered them today. Just wanted to find out a good replacement cable with no controls on it, as i wont be using an ios device with them - looking to spend less than £30 ideally and living in the UK - would an aftermarket ie80 cable work?

Don't see why not. The standard cable is very good IMO. personally I would recommend that you don't go down the rabbit hole of cables changing sound sig.

j444 mod for the IE8/80:
 
This is an easy mod for those who want to attenuate bass on their IE8/80. It's derived from the "j444 front-mod" for the JVC FX850, but works equally well with the Senns.
 
(I know there's also a tape mod to attenuate bass on the IE8/80, but I personally prefer the sound signature of the j444 mod over the tape mod.)
 
What it does: the mod adds a tiny amount of front leakage which avoids over-pressurization in the ear canal and reduces bass quantity. Attenuation is a bit stronger in deep bass than in mid/upper bass, therefore it's recommended to set the IE8/80's bass dial to MAX when performing the mod, even though that seems counter-intuitive at first.
 
Effect on frequency response: I don't have the means to measure FR, so this is just a rough estimate. Blue is the FR with bass dial set to MIN (thx to HeadRoom for the graph!). Orange is the FR with bass dial set to MAX. Green is the resulting FR with bass dial set to MAX after performing the j444 mod. As you can see, the modded IE8/80 have less bass than both the MIN and MAX stock settings, but sound more linear with less midbass hump and better subbass than the MIN stock setting.
 

 
 
How to perform the mod: instructions for the IE8/80 are the same as for the JVCs, so I'll just quote them over from the FX850 thread:
 

  Step by step instructions for the front-mod:
 
Step 1: Find some surplus tips made of thin silicone, e.g. Sony hybrid tips.
 

 
Step 2: Cut off a small stripe, about 1x7mm.
 

 
Step 3: This is the tricky part. Place the stripe alongside the nozzle, so that it protrudes about 1mm at the front end. Hold it carefully in place with your fingertip as you mount the silicone tip.
 

 
Step 4: Check the result - it should look like this from the outside.
 

 
Step 5: Check the result - it should look like this on the inside. Make sure that the stripe protrudes only a tiny bit at the edge of the nozzle, or else it will diffuse the sound.
