Sennheiser HD800S vs. Sony MDR-Z1R

I did not start the conversation, but for me it makes sense.

I arrived at Z1R when searching fore the closed equivalent of the HD800, to use in the office (after HD820 did not deliver).

Of course it is a closed back and there are many differences. However the sound stage is reasonably large and it preserves the details. Two things that I love on the HD800 and what I was looking for in the close equivalent.
That's my pairing as well...HD800 (with Sonarworks ref 3) and the Z1R (I eq the mid bass down a tad). Driven from a Phonitor 2. Depends on the mood I'm in as to what I go with. Also throw the AQ Nighthawk in there on occasion. (eq the mid bass down here too)

Interesting, after years of trying different headphones I have sold and repurchased the 800s and MDR Z1Rs.

These two are now my main headphones.

I adore them both, and I know it sounds obvious but, for me, they are both the perfect headphones for their use case, closed and open, mainly as I live in a house with a teenager:wink:

The both sound works apart for me as they are different beasts, but I love them both.
