So I got them... And the open backed nature makes them impossible to use in my dorm. Anyone got recs for a comparable closed back alternative?

I have a post here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/789577/closed-backed-headphones-with-large-soundstage-and-flat-signature-for-mixing

I don't think you've "got them."

There are literally thousands of threads asking for a closed back alternative to the top open backs. If it existed, we would have found it years ago. A closed back with large soundstage and flat frequency response and all the other characteristics of top of the line open backs simply is a unicorn and will probably remain a unicorn until somebody invests some serious R&D money into the subject.

And please slap anybody who recommends Ether C or LCD-XC. Not even remotely comparable. A TH-900 without the V shaped tonality would have been the closest match, but the Fostex line of closed back dynamics are not really closed back, as they are both barely more isolating than open backs and leak as much sound as open backs.

Sony cd3k and r10 have been out for many years and have a flagship signature IMO. I would consider the Ether C uncompromising closed totl and the best closed offering that we've had in some time. There may be some that like the th-900 over the Ether C...I would not be one of them.

Screw it, I've decided to keep the 800 after auditioning a LOT of headphone at the bh super store. The sound with even a cheap m stage amp and dac is amazing. For anyone that's auditioned the 800S, how much better are they? 10%, 20%, 50%?

Sorry for spamming the post.

The sound of the HD800S we don't know about, but given impressions, comments by Sennheiser, mods replicating the resonator, etc. the sound is just slightly smoother in the treble range (specifically the 6KHz peak), and slightly extended frequency response on both ends (bass and treble). So for me, that's a 5% improvement, for somebody else maybe 1-2%, or 50% depending on what they find important. All subjective.

Looks amazing, but don't think I will upgrade this from my HD800, not that much changes indeed.
