Sennheiser HD800 S Impressions Thread (read first post for summary)
Aug 19, 2019 at 9:44 AM Post #4,891 of 8,481
My opinion does not change every month. I enjoy trying out new gear, so when I buy something new, I post my impressions here so others can benefit from my experience. Is that not what Head-Fi was designed for?

So the more gear we try, the more knowledge we gain along the way, right? And since everything is relative, sometimes our opinions will change when we get new information. If the best headphone you’ve ever heard was a Bose QC35, how do you talk about the price to performance of the LCD 4Z compared to the Abyss Diana Phi? But after you hear many TOTL flagships, you then have a better understanding for just how good or bad the classic HD650 is or the classic Beyerdynamic dt770. Right?

So my gateway into the audiophile world was the Sennheiser 800S which I first bought around 4 years ago. Since then, I’ve been chasing the planar version of that signature ever since. And after trying most of the current high end headphones like the Empyrean, 4Z, HEK V1, HEK V2, HEK SE, Edition X V1, Edition X V2, Ether 2, Final D8000, Ananda, Arya, etc., I’ve ended up right back where I started.

So after my journey of headphones that range from below $1000 up to $4000, I now realize just how awesome the 800S is. Because you can buy it used now for under $1000 and it still sounds as good or better than headphones that cost 4X as much.

But here’s the thing. I’m not a dealer, I’m not a professional reviewer, I’m not a sponsor, and I don’t even work in audio. I offer my findings and reviews for free! I have nothing to gain by being deceptive. I don’t care if you buy from Audeze, Meze, Sennheiser, Audio Technica, or if you never buy another headphone again. So the only thing that offends me is when someone questions my motives, because I don’t have an agenda.
Excellent post.

You’re a lucky man! You have one hell of a collection. I don’t recognize Stax, because I just don’t like electrostatic headphones. But that doesn’t make your collection any less amazing!

@Hifiearspeakers

Your previous post has a lot of weight to it. After hearing a lot of gear. Most gear sounds the same.

Technically 2 sound signatures. Warm and cold.

The HE90, R10, JADE, L3000 and 007mk1 has more of a colour warm sound. Europhia to it.

Omega, Quilia and HP1000 has that cold analytical sound.

HD800 falls in camp 2.

So you not missing out that much. If not anything :)
And HD800 has some traits that is superior to the legends them self!! :)

I just bought the Nighthawks and I like them as much as the 800, Meze, etc. I don't know if the 800 is better, but perhaps only different.

I'll hold your beer when you buy HE1.

In a few years the next STAX OMEGA headphone will be release. Im pretty sure it will be gorgeous looking. And hopefully under 5K.
The HE90 headphone is technically only 6K. Its the combo sytem that made it 12K. But now of course its around 20 to 30K sadly

Im pretty sure that if Sennheiser stop being anal for a bit and release the HE1 headphone alone it be about 25K or less.
Hifiman dose that with the Shangri-la. The SR, is 18K for just the headphone. The system is 50K.

As for reference, release date prices...
Omega 1993 - $1600
Orpheus - $12K
R-10 - $2500
JADE - $1500

So what I am saying is no one should spend more than 6K on a headphone. The god damn cut off line should be 6K. If not audiophilers should protest on the streets like our fellow Hong Kong-ers!!! :right_facing_fist::clap::family_wwgg::family_wwgb::family_mwgg::family_mwg::sunglasses::vulcan::v:
