It's HD700 without it's main weakness, the uneven frequency response (mids dip, mid-highs peak) and without it's main strength (huge soundstage). HD650's strength is it's smoothness of sound and forgiveness and a little lack of detail is it's weakness. HD660s has none of these. Maybe they have in common the fairly even frequency response.

My HD660S sound fantastic over balanced with my ZX300 but over SE the ZX300 is a bit under powered for them.

No regrets buying mine but then I've never heard any other Sennheiser other than the HD800 and I prefer the HD660S.

I even bought a 1.2m 3.5mm cable for it but they just sound too good over balanced with the supplied 3m cable. I will need to buy a short 4.4mm balanced cable for them now (maybe in the new year).

Tending to now use the HD660S at home and my SE846's when out & about (over balanced for both).

New headphone and an headfier (me) used to Hd800, 700 and Beyer T90, need a bit of acclimatation.

I can say two things as very early impressions:
- quite strong head clamp, like the hd650, and more than the (for me) comfier hd600;
- sound is thicker than impressions read in the forums suggested me, but there is a very pleasing and imho realistic sparkle in the high frequencies, compared to hd650 and also 600. Nevertheless, it lacks the transparency of "higher-end" headphones (not necessarily linked to the price).

Ok four things:
- it's clearly an Hd6xx can, far from the large soundscapes of the Hd700 and Hd800;
- it's without doubt a very balanced and competent headphone which will appeal many headfiers.

Don't worry! I'm sure you're gonna enjoy them. Don't let someone else's opinion (or in this case, lack of) sour the experience. Come to your own conclusion tomorrow!

Don't worry he only likes warm maybe a little treble deficient headphones. He is not God just a bloke with an opinion and a particular taste (and maybe an obsessive interest in measurements)

I think that, despite your personal antipathies, Tyll's good work and passion deserve (at least) more respect.

I wasn't worried, because I've heard and read about 20 similar opinions about the hd660s by now, and only 2 a bit different, so I'm really confident, but I was curious though.

I've asked in the "official" product thread, never here. Would you be willing to comment on how the driver technology of the HD660S differs from that of the HD700? Many Head-Fiers would be very interested to know I'm sure.

I have never owned any Sennheiser headphones, but finally got to try the HD650, HD660S, HD800 and HD800S for a fair amount of time, with my Jotunheim DAC/amp. I started with the HD660S and finished with the HD650.

The HD660S is great! It has a nice, satisfying sound signature, good clarity, good imaging and is pretty comfortable. Of the four headphones I tried, it was the most well rounded one. It sounded oddly familiar - maybe like an open Focal Listen. Good bass, too, nicely rounded off towards the lower frequencies instead of falling apart.

The HD650... I don't understand why they are so beloved. They aren't just laid back, they seemed downright lazy to me, overly softening transients, etc. Maybe there was something wrong with them, or the cable. But they also look dated and feel flimsy. I would actually prefer my Philips SHP9500S over them.

The HD800/S have a much wider sound stage, of course, are more comfortable, more resolving, etc. The HD800 have their treble issues, but I found them more engaging than the HD800S.
