Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?

Got a good deal on the 660s. £380. Is a display unit but only 2 customers listend before my purchase.

I had a quick go on the Fiio Q1ii (balanced) with iPhone. It does sound pretty good.

Sold my mojo a while ago. Might have to get one again. Was hoping for a mojo 2 announcement but there probably won’t be one now.

Would be great if someone could give a brief impressions how the 660s pair with the mojo.

Apart from stage width it is a very very good combination.Sound is relatively full for a portable with very good depth and imaging precision, you get that 3d feeling but like you are in a medium size room certainly not orchestra like.Clarity and separation are very good, treble is detailed and sharp but not piercing, vocals get a bit of a boost, slightly in front but clear and engaging and bass is full and punchy.

For a $150-200 more i would seriously look for audiolab m-dac plus even though it is desktop solution.Heard very good things from a friend who has HD 650.

Was looking at the mdac plus but reviews suggest that the amp is not the best.

Decided to go with the Sony TA-ZH1ES. Should be here in couple of days and that way, I can take advantage of the 4.4mm balanced output.

Well, you went from $600 to $2000 in a single post :beerchug:that's a very good choice from what i've read with very musical signature but i don't believe it has a powerful amp either. Now it will drive HD 660 s easily but if you want to go for high end dynamic or planar phones in the future i doubt it would do them justice based on the high price tag without adding a powerful amp to the chain.Maybe go with the mdr z1r in the future as they are purpose made for each other.

Personally i would add another $300 and go for hugo 2 for that cash as again from comparisons the dac is much superior in detail and transparency.Still i like your style, spend $2000+ to drive a $500 headfone, enjoy.

That was a wise move. The Sony should keep you happy for a while.

Already had the hugo 2. Was considering buying it again but the Sony offered more features I needed/ wanted. The HD660s is not my only headphone. Also got the 800s and later on probably the 820. Now, with all them sennheisers, the HDV820 would make more sense, but I didn’t like it when I demoed it at CanJam.

I have an incoming custom Mapletree Audio Ear+ HD so planning on hearing how this headphone sounds with a better amp, but it does sound pretty good just coming out of my iDSD Micro BL.

I have owned many copies of the HD600 and HD650. They all eventually were sold for various reasons many years ago. The HD660S is really nailing it for me. It would be fun to have all 3 headphones in a side-by-side shootout. The HD800/S is my favorite and the 660S might be able to keep me to my new Year's Resolution of not adding more components to the rig. I had the Amiron Home for a brief period many months ago. I regret selling that as it would be a pretty fun to have the two for comparison. That was another headphone that could tempt me away from the HD800/S for a while.

While I didn't think the HD660S was for me it did sound quite good out of a iPhone/Galaxy S8 and not much better out of some of the amps that I tried (BH Crack, MicroZOTL2, EC ZDS, Elise, HA-501). I'd suggest looking into a DAP for the HD660S since some like @pietcux and others really like the HD660S with them and just keep the AV receiver

No , I came across a used one from a fellow HeadFier and just could not resist.

Sweet, the Amiron seem appealing to me from what I've read and heard about them, and knowing you really like your 660S, I'm hoping you can tell us about your thoughts about the strengths and weaknesses of the Amiron versus the HD 660S, when you get the Amiron and have enough head time to form an opinion.

I went to a local headphone store(Bay and Bloor Radio) and went to try out the HD650, HD660s. I also have the 598.

Comfort: Nearly Identical however the HD660s clamped alot more because the guy said it just came in last week.
Sound
Im not a expert on anything so ill try to sum it up as quick as possible. Plus I only listened to 6 songs on them.
Genesis-Tonight Tonight Tonight
  • This is where the instrumental advantage of the 650 show. Near the middle of the song the instrumental section sounds great when the drums start kicking in. With the 650 they have a bit of oumf whereas with the 598 it sounds a bit weak. However the 598's and the 660 showcase Colin's vocals alot better as in the 650 they are a bit behind the instrumentals.
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
  • 650(Brian May's Guitar Can really roar)
  • 660s/598(Brian May's Guitar Can really scream)
  • Freddie Mercury sounds a bit distant again.. with the 650 but sounds up front with the 598/660s
Micheal Jackson - Remember the Time
  • I have to give this one to the 650, the drum and bass attack here is really good. The lower harmony really shine here
Beethoven Moonlight Sonata
Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight
  • 650- The drum section has nice bite here, you can feel the anger in the music.
  • 660/598 - The drums sound kinda weak(more on the 598) here but the vocals are forward.
Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygene 4

650: Warmer, more bass, the vocals are a bit laid back.(is that the veil?) It doesnt bother me so much. Smoother sounding. Soundstage smaller than 598 but more accurate? My favorite of the three, i wish it had a slight more upper mids but other than that it is perfect. Bass Drums sound perfect on these. Instrumentals are more forward with this headphone.
660s: A little more bright. Bass has a bit more detail? But not as present so you don't hear it much compared to the 650. Imo it might be the more accurate headphone but i cant really tell for sure, since i spent only about 10 minutes with each.
598: Brightest of the three imo, Sound-stage is biggest on this one however. Vocals are really nice on this one.

Overall I think the 650 would be the best for me. I'm not too big on bright headphone since they tend to cause me hearing fatigue. I also tried the Grado Sr80... not my cup of tea at all. Way too bright. I also brought my friend who is a complete noob in headphones and he said the HD650 were his favorite.

DL: DR
650 > Instrumentals, warmer sound, easy listening. If you want to enjoy the music
660/598 > Vocals, Brighter sound. Might be fatiguing after a while(598) More analytical listening

Take my opinion with a grain of salt, by the way. The best way to know for sure what you would like is to listen to them both.
