Little Dot or Woo? In the 500 range, I dunno yet.

Their great... the Grado amps... for Grados (and perhaps other low impedance phones that require high current output).

But... the Senns need high voltage output.

You'll be amazed by their sound when you get the right set up for them - simply amazed!

Though... I would admit, the Denon D5000s with the right set up sound virtually as good.

YES!!!!
Watch out for price drops though with the 800s around now.
Is it okay to suggest getting at least a little dot mkII to run them?

Hey Guys... I may still order the HD650s...but...I am also considering AKG K501 or 701 and possibly even HD580/600.

The 701s can be picked up in the US for less than the HD650 in the UK...501s will need to be good used obviously as will the 580s.

Anyone have opinions to offer or phones that fit the bill that they want to move...???

TIA

I can't tell you what "the right set up" may be... but... I can tell you two that are superb with the D5000s:

1. Marantz SA8001 > WA6 SE Maxed or X-CAN v8 > D5000s, or

2. Monarch M24/NM24 > WA6 SE Maxed or X-CAN v8 > D5000s.

You will be amazed by any combination of these with the D5000s.

One caveat... the X-CAN v8 is absolutely "devine" with the D5000s... but... only "OK" with high impedance phones (e.g. Senns). The WA6 SE is superb with all phones.

And... if you're on a budget... you will have a very hard time trying to better the sound of the "new" version of the HD650s (or HD580/600s) driven by the Line Stage of the M24/NM24 - no separate amp is necessary!

Well...I had the HD650s sent to my buddy's hotel. So, I'll see them in a coupla weeks I guess. If they're not to my liking I can always sell them I guess.

I'm thinking I would like to keep an eye open for some other (used) cans...Maybe Sextett or K501??

Suggestions...???

In fact, in the UK, the price of the 650 has just gone *up*.

That's the opposite of what I've noticed, on Amazon.co.uk a month ago the HD650 was £250, a few weeks ago £213, and now £180.

The UK retail price went up on the 12th January - so what you noticed was before the price increase.

What a retailer actually sells it for is up to him.

I paid 180quid.

I just wish my buddy was there earlier in the week...the Pound was 1.34 for a couple days...I think I got in at 1.43 or so.

Who likes...K501 or K240 Sextett?...How will they compare to my K240M and K271MKII??

TIA

I bought mine on 14 January for £179.99 on Amazon.co.uk - they're now £199.99

John (Willett), how many hours' burn-in would you recommend for the 650s?

I've had my HD650s for a little over a year and really like them. I am not sure if they've completely burned in as all my other headphones sound brighter around the upper mids/highs. They're also very comfortable to wear.

For the HD 800 the designer recommends 24 hours of pink noise (NB: pink *not* white) at normal listening levels.

I would think the same for the HD 600 / 650 would be fine as well.

Many thanks, John.

I've had mine burn in for 200+ hrs, and thought that should be it. I left them at slightly high volume with 10 quite different pieces of music, on repeat mode for 8 days and only stopping 5-10 mins each day.

Just downloaded a 5-second pink-noise sample wav file and will do as you suggested for 24 hrs.

However, I'm still puzzled as some people have even suggested anything from 200 -1000+ hrs' burn-in. At first I thought they were joking as I thought this sounded ridiculously long, but apparently they were not.

You mention the designer recommends 24 hrs for the 800's and you reckon the same applies to the 650's - I'm quite happy with that.

But have you any idea why there would be such 'disturbingly' extreme views? Is there any scientific basis behind all of this burn-in business? I think a lot of people may have similar doubts.

To me they already sound better than when out of the box, but 200-1000+ hrs?!...
