i just bought a used Sennheiser HD650 and the sound is coming through only one ear cup. The previous owner is adamant there was nothing wrong with it before sending it. Is it possible i made a nooby mistake with connecting the wires or something? What could be wrong with it? Should i send it back or should i try to find out whats wrong?

Did you try swapping the left and right side cables? If the side that doesn't work starts producing sound after that, then likely the cable is broken. If not, try to gently push and very very very gently do a slight wiggling motion on the side that doesn't work. If it comes back on then there's a problem with the soldering between the socket and the driver.

If those don't work, pull the TRS jack off whatever amp you're using with it (which I assume works normally with whatever other headphone you have). Now reinsert it slowly - did any sound come out of the non-working side at any point? Gently twist it around with a slight pulling motion - any sound come out on the faulty side? If sound came back on, it's likely the soldering inside the TRS jack is loose (if it's totally broken there won't be any sound on the faulty side).

If the problem is the cable, the previous owner might have been using an aftermarket cable (shorter, sounds better, or thinks it does) and just coiled the stock cable and tossed it into the box, then shipped it without testing the stock cable it shipped with. The way it was coiled could have stressed the cable on either end.

Make sure the cables are plugged in with the L and R marks with the letters facing out on the headphones or it could cause that problem. The pins have to be plugged in that way.
