Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

If I like the darker signature of the HE-400 but find them not very comfortable, would moving to the HD650 be a complete change? It seems like I'd get some more mids and loose a little treble emphasis?

Whatever this veil is, at least for me, it means I can listen to Strauss, Mahler and Shostakovich etc without feeling fatigued by the upper frequencies(usually ff string/wind) but rather just hear them untainted by extra piercing harshness. Ultimately this means im not forever searching through eBay for the next headphone. The 595s I had before that I also enjoyed tremendously, but had too much up top to ignore and by the end I found myself listening to the treble rather than the music. Now, unless i get rich im content. :)

I'd definitely get the HD650s if you want richer mids, much improved comfort, and don't mind losing out on the super-textured and extended bass. The HD650s have a nice punch to them and go surprisingly low (lower than I initially thought) but they can't hold a candle to any planar cans as far as bass goes.

I just bought an used pair of HS650 in mint condition for USD237 from eBay. After reading so many reviews, I am surprised that my iPod and ASUS G53 could drive these headphones easily and these sound better than my SE215 albeit unamplified.

I am wondering should I start with FiiO E12? or just skip to Headstage Arrow straight ahead? Which amplifier is a good start for a beginner like me? I am not picky, I just want to get the most of from these cans. :)

I'd recommend the Neco Soundlab V3 for the HD650, if you want a portable amp.

It's a common, widespread myth that the HD-650 is hard to drive. Unfortunately, it will be repeated continuously.
