Don't worry, HD650 is quite good out of my laptop headphone out.
What special about HD650 is this baby is good almost with anything you pair them with, good boy headphone!

Err, except portables, like Cowon or iPod.

Will use unamped first, and in a few months... Lafigaro 339 is high on my list

Not so sure i agree with RedBull this time, amp is important, just don't get discouraged and sell it off due to the sound until after you have amped it.  Better the amp, the better the sound, esp if you get one made for high impedance phones, tube if possible.  Good luck, I love my 650s but don't get much time with them anymore.

Sorry guys, I'm ditching my subscription to the HD650 thread.  Since modifying my $70 T50RPs the HD650 has lost my support as the most "natural" can for its price...because the T50s have slaughtered them like a single samurai slicing through a village of peasants, a massacre of the highest calibre.  How much does a mint (the only sign of usage are the earpads) HD650 used go for these days?  I paid $699 Australian dollars two years ago from Len Wallis Audio in Sydney.

I appreciate the sentiment, but I stay wary of 'giant-killers.' I bought my HD650s from a dude here (who has since been banned for a bad deal, I believe) totally mint for $300 or $325.

You paid $699 for $400 headphones and you think the T50RP sound better...

To each his own. Have fun.

I don't think I can stomach a $400 loss - I think I'll keep them...they still are a beautiful sounding can.

I can't imagine how much I'd lose on the K701 which I paid $800 (I'm looking at the receipt right now) when the retail was $899...in Australian bricks and mortars store...ahhh the days before on line purchasing.

....not to mention the $1700 on the D7000....and the Australian dollar is pretty much on par with the US Dollar....

Needless to say, the days of walking into a shop and buying top of the line everything are over.

Cheerios! I will also make a suggestion that a good tube amp really is the way to go with the HD650s...and since I am keeping these beauties I am not ditching this friendly thread.

Oh I almost forgot I guess I should join this thread while I'm at it. I just got my HD650s a couple of days ago. They're a pleasant change from the K701s.

Hello everyone.
Coming back now after a long brake.

Are the HD650 still a hot pair of headphones ?

I will be making music with them

I will probably get an amp for it too. (Any recommendations (not to expensive)?)

Regards

Sure dallan, I have 2 tube amps for that reason, what I meant was that HD650 easily sound good almost from any amp, but optimal sound is a different story.
Not too picky like HD800 or K701 for example.
