Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

People mention grain, but me personally over the 9 months I've had my 58x. I have never heard any of those distortions that people call grain. Of course bad recorded music will sound bad, but absolutely no grain whatsoever.
I've been really happy with my 6xx, but hae thought of getting a 600 ,660, or 58x, but keep dropping th idea because people say the 660 do not scale and the 58x is grainy. I've heard that alot. But also heard that about the 600, just not as much.

My HD650 and HD6XX are slightly different sounding with HD6XX just a touch brighter and has a touch less mid bass

I could not agree more. I would say that the HD6XX is closer to HD600 then HD650 in terms of treble energy. To my ears HD650 is the darkest sounding of the three.

I think in my case, with my experience with the 6xx I'm better off steering clear of anything people might say is grainier or brighter. My next headphone is going to be the audioquest nighthawk carbon i suspect. Super comfy and relaxed darkness I'm hoping for there. Going to pair it with a fairly bright setup I have though so balance a bit.

So I would be better off getting a 650 instead of a 600 if I wanted to have similar sound sigs of both the hd600 and 650? Since I already have the 6xx

I agree. If you think the 6xx is on the bright side. I don't think you'll like the 58x.

I’m sorry if I was misunderstood. English is not my native language. What I meant was that in terms of brightness the HD6XX and HD600 is pretty similar. The HD650 is darker sounding then both of them.

maybe its because your "old" hd650 has "old" and comfortable earpads, the 6xx on the other side has new and stiff ones which doesnt fit your headshape right at the moment.

please swap the earpads (650<>6xx) and tell me if you can hear an audible difference.

Cool, Thanks! I think I'm going to go in a radical direction from here! Nighthawk! :)
Had a Nighthawk for a few months and found them fatiguing at times. While they don't sound bright initially they were a bit bright with some tracks, more in the mid/upper treble area so since most tracks lack much info in this range they don't sound like bright headphones but some tracks have quite a bit of info in the upper frequency range and those were bright/fatiguing at times to me.

I did swap the pads on my HD650 with the HD6XX and even tried pads from a friends HD660S and my HD58X, HD6XX was still bit brighter with less mid-bass bump than HD650. FWIW my HD650 is from 2014 but doesn't get much use and I've bent the sliders so the clamping force is quite light which in turn has kept my pads from getting flat.

The brightness of the Nighthawk really depends on the tracks but as a whole with 90% of what I listen to the Nighthawk usually sounded darker/smoother than the HD650.

I can't really hear anything past 16k, even 15k is pushing it for me so I wonder if I'd skate by without noticing? I'm only really sensitive between 6-11k
