Thanks. I have both the HD600 and 6XX but I've been curious about the 490 Pro for a while now.

I have tried many headphones but I will never sell my Sennheiser HD 650, I have an SMSL DO300 DAC + a simple Topping L30II, the sound with the HD 650 is supreme.
Try the hd650 with topping l30II and let me know.

I recently saw a review of the HD650 (can't recall which one) which claimed the 650 and 6XX were not exactly the same sound wise. Is this true? I have the 6XX but I've never had a regular 650.

I have the HD600, HD650 and HD6xx. The 6xx is a bit crisper, better separation and more detailed to my ears - mind you I am by no means an expert. I prefer to run the 6xx on my tube amp (Valhalla2) and the 650 on my Jotunheim 2. The 650 sound better to me on the SS amp. They sound more open and clear when running on the SS. I would agree that the 650 and 6xx do not sound the same. Again, just my opinions.I recently saw a review of the HD650 (can't recall which one) which claimed the 650 and 6XX were not exactly the same sound wise. Is this true? The 650 and 6XX are the same headphone. The old 6XX box even said HD 650 by the barcode (maybe they still do, I don't know). If I recall, a Sennheiser rep even confirmed that they're the same headphones, no difference at all other than color and cable length.
The only audible differences will be due to unit variation.

I'm listening to my 6XX right now on my tube amp. Definitely the "darkest" sounding of all my headphones. I'm torn on whether I like them much anymore. Perhaps I've come to appreciate a "brighter" sound.

That's interesting. Between the 6xx and 650, the 650 sounds darker to me on my tube amp. I like them both immensely. I say this much, the 600 is getting the least amount of use currently.I'm listening to my 6XX right now on my tube amp. Definitely the "darkest" sounding of all my headphones. Well again I don't have a regular 650 to compare. Perhaps the brightness of my Grado GH4 kind ruined the 6XX for me. Not sure.
I also found the HD 650 and HD 6XX to sound different, compared two recently manufactured pairs and they sounded quite different. The HD 650 was more liquid, spacious, and darker sounding with harder sounding upper mids whereas the HD 6XX was drier and a tad brighter and felt like a bit of a middle ground between the HD 600 and HD 650. Could be unit variance though. That's interesting. Between the 6xx and 650, the 650 sounds darker to me on my tube amp. I like them both immensely. That's the best way to describe the 6xx, middle ground between the 600 and 650. And yes, I recently got both pairs of 650 and 6xx.I also found the HD 650 and HD 6XX to sound different, compared two recently manufactured pairs and they sounded quite different. It's the exact same driver, one is just branded by Massdrop. Any audible difference is going to be due to differences in pad wear between the two.I recently saw a review of the HD650 (can't recall which one) which claimed the 650 and 6XX were not exactly the same sound wise. Is this true? I have the 6XX but I've never had a regular 650.
It was found by customcans the rear foam of the driver is slightly different, the HD 650 is two foams stacked together, whereas the HD 6XX is one thick foam. The HD 600 is just one of the thinner foams. Not sure if current HD 600, HD 6XX, and HD 650's use the same driver but with different rear foam, I know the HD 600 and HD 650 drivers were different from each other in the past but not sure about now and if it's just damping differences now, these headphones have been revised multiple times. It's the exact same driver, one is just branded by Massdrop.
