Scored an HD6xx off FB Marketplace for $40! Cleaned it up. Threw out the headband and ordered a Geekria replacement. Slapped a spare set of pads on I had laying around. Sounds great on the Bifrost 2/64 -> Darkvoice 336se (NOS 6AS7G Svetlana Winged “C” and a NOS Tung-Sol Reissue 6SN7).

They look well used, pull the pads and foam off and check there’s no debris on the driver.

Ya know, they werent too bad. A little dust, but otherwise pretty clean. However the plastic, headband and pads were pretty gross (and a little smelly 🤮). I gave everything a nice cleaning, threw out anything fabric and washed off all the plastic parts. Good to go now!

Finally, it took me a year to complete the HD 6 series journey, 660S,660S2,600,6XX. Must say 6XX is my favorite by not so small a margin. My preference goes 6XX > 660S ~ 660S2 > 600.

I would say of the bunch, the outlier is HD600. Although it has sweat solid mid and treble, its lack of bass is just too obvious. The overall bright presentation makes it hard to estimate the sound stage. It's probably because of this, I find it confined and veiled. Dare I say, I can't get used to and don't like it.

For general music listening, I think 6XX, 660S, 660S2 are mostly similar. If one doesn't do AB comparison, the 2-5k dip in 660S(2) is not obvious. And even with AB tests the extra bass extension in S2 is hardly noticeable. However, the smoothness in 6XX is truly something. I knew 650/6XX is known for this. What surprised me was that there is no loss of details at all. It is true though there is not much airiness compared to 660, but the space is filled with sound that should have been there, and you get that sense of fullness and completeness to make it feel real. It is smooth as it ought to be, and it is not artificially smoothed or weakened. I kind of want to question should a headphone even sound airy in the first place. I do find 6XX's treble is not as biting as 600, but it is not as laidback as S2. Among the bunch, 6XX has the least amount of sibilance. It is simply amazing they could achieve that without hurting treble performance.

Their differences are a little more important to me when it comes to podcasts or vlogs as I spend hours on those every day. The 2-5k dip in 660S(2) makes them sound like people are holding back breath when they speak especially for males with deep voices. The HD600 is even worse as it is just bright overall. With 6XX, finally people are talking normally.

650 has that seductive smoothness and warm sound that makes you forget about technicalities, if you like analysing your music with the microscope though there are many other headphones out there that can do that.

Indeed with the other three, I was constantly reaching out to other headphones. They don't stay. I am finally at peace with 6XX knowing well that there are better performers technically at similar price range.

I have my Sennheiser HD650 for about 6 years. I found out the Sennheiser HD600/650 are really sensitive to sources and gears. I have used 3 AMPs two DACs with my Sennheiser HD650. Depend on setup the HD650 can sound veiled, boring, bright, congested, narrow. Yes, I am correct the Sennheiser HD650 can sound bright. Over the years I have upgraded and find out HD650 can sound beautifully with the right set up even can remove many negative things above I mentioned. I also have a Sennheiser HD800 but I enjoy the HD650 more when listening to music than HD800. I am getting old and now my ears like smooth sound than technicall sound and putting the HD650 on my head to listen to music makes me smile and just keep listening to music without aware of time like addiction.

I just purchased a second hand dedicated Roon core server run with my Ferrum Hypsos. Hopefully the sound keeps improved. I also would like to purchase a second hand Sennheiser HD600 if I have a chance. I just missed a chance to purchase a second hand HD600 with only $200 Australia dollars.

If you had told me 5 years ago when I first purchased them that the 6XX / 650 would be be one of my favorite headphones when paired with the right amplifier (even compared to sets that cost 10x as much) I would have said there's just no way, but here I am!

They're absolutely magical on something like a Bottlehead Crack, and downright transcendental with any of the DNA amps (don't even get me started...).

I have the 6xx. I love it but not as much as the Sennheiser hd 800.

That’s a problem I think the 600 & 650 will always have, people buy a cheap amp based around the headphones low cost. This is a situation where the headphones scale ability urges you spend way more on the amp and source.

It’s definitely a “problem” for my wallet (and the time it took me to realize this truth!), but otherwise I think it’s all worth it for the audio umami provided… 😁
