After reading lots of reviews, I think that I might get the Sennheiser HD590. I just want to make sure...will these things sound great without an amp? Or is it worth it to buy an amp and get different headphones?

I liked them pretty well out of a discman and may verry well get a pair for my self. I think you wouldn't go wrong with them, it's just a matter of weather or not you can do better, which IMO will probably be iffy if you can't try things out. Have you tried the 590s?

hd590's will work well without an amp, but as with any high end headphone will really shine with the addition of an amp. If you are not planning on getting an amp the 590 would not be a bad way to go.

I agree. If you're not getting an amp, the 590s are an excellent pair of phones. If you are considering getting an amp, the 580's and the 600's are more refined.

Great, break them in and tell us how much they change for you.

Based on my experience with my HD 590's and various recordings on CD, I will say only one thing about those headphones:

IF YOU FEED THEM RECORDINGS THAT ARE CRAPPY TO BEGIN WITH, THOSE RECORDINGS WILL SOUND EVEN CRAPPIER THAN EVER!!

And speaking of crappy recordings that bring out the very worst from the HD 590's, I pointed to the Eminem Marshall Mathers CD (that I used in a Sennheiser shoot-out) as an example. That CD seemed to have been mixed and/or mastered through a cheap-ass boomy p.o.s. pair of monitor speakers and/or headphones - which may have caused the engineer(s) to ****** up the EQ, especially in the mid-bass frequencies.
