In a nutshell, will the HD555 provide a noticeable listening experience upgrade over the 497's, particularly an improved soundstage? I've had my 497's for years now but I see a particularly good deal on this so wondering if the upgrade is substantial enough to justify the purchase. I know they are different styles but I'm fine with either one, it's the sound quality I'm interested in.

The HD 497 have a brighter sound to them than the HD 555, as the HD 497 sounds very excited. In comparison, to my ears, the HD 555 is more balanced with a wider sound stage. I consider it an upgrade for audiophile listening. The HD 497, replaced by the EH 350 (essentially the same thing) is still a fun headphone, as is the HD 555, but the EH 350 is certainly enhanced in the upper and lower registers.

Frankly, there's no comparison. The 555 is in a different class.
