at 55 ohms are these good headphones to use with a portable or are they better off with an amp?they just arrived at dumoulin electronic in montreal and i tested them with my minidisc portable and the volume and sound were good but i'm not an expert in headphones like many other headfiers and i would like opinions on the subject.thanks.

AFAIK, they do benefit from an amp but, as you've noticed, do not necessarily require one. If you plan on getting an amp, it needn't be anything overly extreme though it should be suited for somewhat lower impedance cans.

I'm using them with a Go-Vibe 3 and the presentation has become crisper and punchier. So yes - you will get nice benefit from an amp.

I found the HD555 acceptable unamped. A lot of people recommend them for unamped purposes, but personally I think the difference that an amp makes is relatively solid. I would recommend an amp for them. It doesn't have to be anything spectacular, imho.
