I'd advise you to lock your credit card account, bring out $100 and then lock all the rest of your money into a safe.
1) What is your Price range? Budget(50-100$)? Mid range(150-250$)? high end(limitless budget... DONT try and ask what 'the best (insert headphone type) headphones money can buy'... you'll find headphones in this category that is mind boggling in price.....)?
2) Form factor? small size, street-style, full size, medium size, in-ear, etc...
2.5) do you want isolation or not? (blocking out outside sound)
3) Also, i'd advise you to audition (listen) to any hi-fi headphone you can find in your area to get some feeling for good headphones..
The 497's direct competitors are: Grado SR60, Beyerdynamic DT231 Pro, Sony XD200, and etc..
Try and take a listen to those headphones including the HD497, and pick out what you like (or ask what we think of them).
