Interesting.. my 600 ohm HD250 beats everything I've heard besides the Stax SC21.
Agree with you 100%, so far only thing I have heard that is a step up is my 600ohm 540 RG, if you have a chance do get these. Nothing being made these days sound like these do. For me 250 are ther best closed back cans there are.

I got the HD540 ref 1 600 ohm and they're both winners in my book, different headphones for different moods. The HD540 are so good that I wonder how the golds are.

From what I've heard, the golds arethe same as the EP ref 1 just with a better matching drivers, paint and a wooden box.

Some describe it like that. Don't know what is the difference technically, sonicly golds are on different level. My brother got two 600 ohm 540 reference and while they are amazing golds are just so much more. I can not describe the difference in words. Not possible. One has to hear them to believe.

I have had them all.

Golds are slight warm tilt with more detail with the right pads. Ref 1. V1 is also great, but not as engaging as ref. G’s and lack just a tad resolve imo. Hd250 with stock thick foam/pads is right there with the best also.

It makes me sad that Sennheiser no longer makes great cans like these.

Better keep that on the dl boys and girls there are a lot of guest on the lookout :)

Happy hunting!
Hello
Could you share what pads & foam do you use with 540 & 250?
I am having a lot of problems finding good pads/foam.
Thanks

The trick is to have the right mixture of diffusing and absorptive material inside the spacious cup. It works similar as when you treat the acoustic in your listening room.

The little plastic tubes are just pipettes that I cut with scissor.

Just had to come back here as I am having a magical evening listening to Dream Theatre, Systematic Chaos. I am astounded how these cans surround you with the sound, keeping things feeling open yet distinct. I haven't enjoyed listening to Portnoy drum this much and had the whole mix sound this good...

I am now driving them along with my Canton Egos out of a JVC JR-s300. Loving it!

Perfect match for the Audio-gd R2R-11!

Midrange transparency plus more than enough power!

I found that original Senn pads are still sold, with the original mounting rings that snap in place perfectly. They are sold for HD430 these days. Also the foam inserts are being sold as well. I got both from audiosanctuary.co.uk:
- pads: https://www.audiosanctuary.co.uk/sennheiser-hd430-earpads-black.html
- foam: https://www.audiosanctuary.co.uk/se...erence-hd540-gold-inner-discs-pair-black.html

My HD540 ref 1 sound very good with them, if maybe a bit too bassy for my taste.

Edit: added a photo for reference

Those are not the original inner foam as the original are hollow. The pads themselves are quite different but close to original, maybe even better.

Well, they are made by Senn and labeled as being for HD 540, so I guess they are as close to the original as you can possible get at this time. Any clue where we can get our hands on some that are closer to the original?

The original pads would be the same as 540 and 540 gold. With foam cut in two circles and piece od silk in between. And the material is some sort of fabric. Those pads were purposfully designed and tuned for these headphones. Without them the intended tuning is unattainable. Only chance is to renew them, if you got old ones. But finding the correct foam for the pads is a bit of a problem.

I had brand new HD250 a year ago in closed box so I had some experience with the original HD250 pads and foam. The pads are great but I screwed mine trying to get it on and off it's plastic adapter, still in slight used condition if anyone's interested to work on them.
