Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

I have a Musical Fidelity MX-DAC and Musical Fidelity MX-HPA on the way. Let's see how it does vs the zdac v2 - hope I hear a big difference for big price difference heh.

They sound great with my MF M1 HPA, fed by the DAC out of my Audio-GD 10ES. I also have a MF V90 that I have not tried with the HD700. I will try tonight and report my findings. Who knows, maybe MF amps and 700s are just meant for each other!

Just tried ryanjsoo's foam ring mod yesterday. The peaks are definitely dulled somehow as I listened to songs where I've been hearing some form of sibilance previously. If u guys haven't alrdy, do give it a try. Cheap mod that works well :))

Parasound Zdac v2 is like $300 used and is wonderful with a stock HD700, no mods needed - for those that want to keep the headphone stock. Great pairing.

Haha but the mod is only £2. So for those who find it a little shrill on existing gear...you know what to try :p

Just got my HD 700 (about a month ago) and now must resist in upgrading to the HD 800s. Really want to know how they compare :frowning2:

Also can anyone recommend a mic (not like a Yetti) just one that goes by your mouth

HD-800 or HD-800S?  These two sound different enough that I would own both, I have the HD-800 but after hearing the 800S a few months ago its on my list of nice to have some day since I have other headphones that I have more interest in first.

Either is different from the HD-700 but they both need a good amp to get the most out of them, OTL is my preference for the HD-800 and a SS/hybrid for the HD-800S

I like the HD800 better than the HD800 S. They are totally different.

The HD800 sounds like a HD700 on steroids.
The HD800 S sounds like a HD600 on steroids.

HD800 requires more care in dac/amp matching, HD800S less so.

But when matched right HD800 has a special "live" speakerish quality the HD800S lacks.

Both are cool, but if you like the HD700 more than the HD600 you'll probably like the HD800 more than the HD800S and vice versa.

I haven't heard 800S and valhalla2 combo but I think it would be good since the 800S is a bit warmer and the valhalla2 is close to neutral for a tube amp.

How does either compare to the HD 700 though, this is going to be primarily used for gaming and I heard the HD 800 series is picky about the audio quality. Is the difference as big as the price tag?

Haven't heard the HD800S yet, but expect it to be similar in many respects tot he HD800. I can say the HD700 is astounding for gaming. Actually, it is very good for anything that requires environmental realism such as binaural recordings or game audio. Honestly, my game has improved a lot in CS:GO, especially since they implemented HRTF. Battlefield 1 sounds great as do many modern titles.

I own both. Clearly a family resemblance with 700 being a bit warmer and more midbass.
Soundstage and comfort is good on both...just better on 800. 700 works a bit better on good
SSamps, both are amazing on my Decware CSP-2+.
Regards,
Hibuck...

Both 800 and 800S are picky about audio quality but the 800 more so than the 800S, but for gaming it really doesn't matter since its all digitally generated audio unlike music which comes mostly from analogue instruments.  While I don't game much these days the HD-700 with a STX sound card was pretty good to me, great positional audio and one of the most comfortable headphones.  I never really used my 800 for gaming since it didn't sound as good as the HD-700 from the STX, I've since sold the STX and my gaming is limited to 1 or 2 days a month of old games like Test Drive Unlimited 1/2, Metro 2033, Tom Clancy's HAWK, Crysis, COD: World at War, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Anniversary and Legend.  My gaming rig is old and I just leave it as is on Win7 (has win10 digital key), audio is now optical to Teac AH-01 and either Stax SRD-34, SR-225i (modded) or HE-400 (modded), HD-700 only for music these days.

The difference between the HD-700 and HD-800S is not as big a difference in the price tag if using both for gaming, for music it depends on the individual, for me the difference is not worth the price difference at this time, maybe when the 800S comes down to $1000-1100 since the 800 is usually under $1k these days.
