Sennheiser HD 660S2 thread

I find the 650 and even more so the 600 to have better clarity than 660S2
After extensive listening to both i find the that the 600 has better timbre than the s2 but that's about it. The 600 has a slightly etched quality to it similar to what happens when you turn up the sharpness to excessive levels on your tv. I think people perceive that as additional clarity.
Also it can sound a bit thin on certain recordings. The s2 has more depth and more weight than the 600.
Yes the 600 scales better and sounds anemic on linear type amps where the s2 is more forgiving on those.
The 600 is excellent and it probably comes down to amp headphone compatibility. But the s2 is definitely more forgiving.
Just my take.

The upper mid is at a more correct level on the 600 and 650, that clarity is what you’re are perceiving as “etch” is it naturally clear there is no treble “enhancement” on a 600. You hear it this way because the 660S/2 has a dip in the mids which sacrifices neutrality for a slightly bigger stage and this also highlights the bass.

Yep, we all hear things differently. It's why, although I haven't been to one yet, CanJam is such an awesome idea. Hopefully your target headphones are there for a listen,
and takes some of the guess work out of your search!
I have schizophrenic hearing. I don't have a preferred signature. I bounce all over continually. This makes getting rid of gear nearly impossible.

To be honest i always thought that the 600 series in general was a bit too mid heavy. To my ears the s2 is about right. The Neumann ndh30 to many on this site is markedly more natural and the mids are no where near as prominent.
Btw etch is etch and not clarity.
They are also "dry" sounding on many recordings because they lack bass.

Hello, hopefully i don't get banned for blasphemy. Just got my 660s2 and hardly noticed any improvement versus Senn Game One. Not even sub-bass people talking about cannot be feeled. Used Zen air DAC. But when i connected 600 euros 660s2 to my motherboard its just started to sing. Bass is where it should be. Vocals and Instruments is distinct.
Two questions? is Air DAC that bad? What amp+dac combo i can buy for 250 bucks max? atom stack, mangi unity? Or it will be flat undistinguishable as air dac? Topping is no go for sterile reasons i suppose.
I tend to believe that you should always buy an Amp and DAC seperately. For $250 you're not gonna get much, maybe a Magni modi stack. The least I'd recommend is something like Modius and Midgard, or a Vali.

Wait, our collections are supposed to get smaller?!?!

I'm leaning towards Magni Unity for negative gain feature, its pretty much 199 without shipping, Atom stack in 250is but without negative gain. I tend to listen at very low volume (currently at 5% windows? 8% for music. )

Ordered Lake People G103 MK2 with intention to power HD660S2.
I hope that it will be a good match :L3000:

Try them on an OTL amp.
Yeah i know. After i buy a new dac that will be my next purchase. The s2 at least sounds very good on all amp types. The 600 in general needs an OTL to get that magic
However my class A Rebel amp does a good job mimicking the tube like quality of an OTL. Thats what makes that amp unique. The 600 sounds very good on the Rebel but noticeably not as good as the s2.

Perfect fit for reducing the clamp and as an added bonus its reducing the creaking.
I have to believe that the dimensions of the box was done intentionally for this purpose.
Lol
