I'm a semi-pro mastering engineer. I would like to get a new pair of headphones to check my work. I know if I mention mastering in headphones I will get in trouble with the Pro's, saying that its impossible to do it in headphones, so I understand that. Also, I really like making apples to oranges comparisons to make it more fun. With that said:

What would you guys recommend for mastering work?

I'm planning to pair the HD 600 with Schiit amp. I know there are in 2 different price ranges, so that is why I'm asking the question, does it make sense to spend more money?

thanks,

HD600's have one of the, if not the flattest dynamic headphones on the current market. Which is great for critical listening. However, the bass is a bit lacking. Id go with a decent closed back headphone to check bass. If you use solely the hd600, the bass may be clipping isince its not audible in some instances. Especially sub sonic frequencies. I hate clipping. I hope you look out for it. Especially in explosions/action scenes. Cough cough battlefield 4.
