Hello,
now my Stax SR 44 goes bad
frown.gif
and I want to buy new headphones.

My choice are:
Sennheiser HD 600, Beyerdynamic DT 931, Grado SR 225/325,
AKG K 501 (in this sequence)
or one of the Stax - SR-202 SR-303 SR-404 (but more expensive)

The only problem I have, it give's no dealer in Austria/Vienna that have's all of this to hear them for testing. So I must collect all informations I can get about.

Please tell me your experience with this headphones.

What the difference beween Sennheiser HD 600 & Beyerdynamic DT 931 & Grado SR 225/325

PS: Where I can get new inexpensive connection cables (and plugs) fore my Stax SR 44 - the dealer in Vienna requests more than 100 USD fore it, so the repair is not economical - the Stax are more than 20 years old.

Wow. 60 views and not one reply. Hm.......well, for starters. What kind of music you listen to? And what's your current setup /w the SR 44? Finally, is price an issue?

There is no way we can give an easy answer...I think it would be just better to read through pages and pages and pages of stuff.

A good place to start would be evilcthulu's review. Also search out Jan's reviews...than read everyone elses findings.

uh those higher caliber cans are differnt, and it's hard to say what you would like better

but the akg 501 seem to fit your music type quite well

but then again
senn600, grado rs-2, sony 3000
will all do a good job as well
or maybe even better to your ears

it's all about preference
but yea
the 501 is very good for your type of music to most people's ears

read the reviews

I have the Stax SR34, which looks very similar to yours but is a later model, around 1982. It has a cable problem too (sound sometimes cuts out from one channel if the cord is positioned just so) but my roommate uses them and likes them a lot. Mine are a little light on the bass but have a very nice midrange.

The HD600 is much more laid back (less treble) than the other two which many (including me) consider on the bright side. The SR34 is probably between the two. It's really a matter of what you like, as people have their own preferences.

Where I can get a new cable for my Stax SR 44 - my dealer requests about 100 USD - it's to much for me for an old headphone. But where I can get STAX connectors (male / female)?

Well, 2 years warranty is great - but maybe not if you have to pay European prices for Grados...

IMHO you should go the patriotic way and get yourself the AKG K501.
Given that you power them properly, they will sound very good and will cost less than 100 $.

Then you will have something to listen to and enough time and money to make your final decision - ie stay with the AKGs or get something better. At least you won't be in a rush (always a bad thing)

Bye

In other words I like an naturally, detailed, differentiat sound
bass - very deep, detailed and dry, not "rummmms, boooommms"
meddle - naturally, detailed for woman vocals, not sharp
treble - detailed, silkily, differentiates

Hi,
now I bought my Sennheiser HD 600 :-))
It sounds better than Stax SR 44 (but SR44 runs once one side).

I compare the headphone output from my CD player (Philips CD 650) and my receiver (Yamaha CR 2040). The receiver sounds a little bit better, but it haves 270 Ohm resistors in serial to the output.
The CD 650 uses NE 5532N for filters and JRC 4556 for headphone amp - with 150 Ohm resistor in serial. DAC is a TDA1541P.
