Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

Looks like a very simple circuit, the paralleled output of the DAC chips goes straight to the line out via a coupling capacitor. That is where an upgrade can make a big difference…

The only problem is: decent coupling caps are big and won’t fit inside the case (and will cost more than the DAC)😀.

I fitted some Obbligatos on the output of my TeraDak Chameleon (16x TDA1543 in two banks of 8).

Sometimes it happens when the DAC loses synch with the source. Does it mute?

Hey guys,

I wanted to see if any of you guys have heard the Eikon and the HD600 and could do a comparison for me? I’m curious if the 600s have similar highs as the Eikon. Without a tube amp the Eikons high can be a little harsh but I feel like they might be more detailed. Obviously totally difference price points but I’m thinking of picking up the 600s for a second pair and getting rid of my Eikons. I know I wouldn’t get that amazing subbass but I feel like I would get a more smoother, even mid range like the 650s while hopefully not losing out on too many of the highs. Any thoughts?

I've sold the Eikons and still have the 600s. I found the Eikons to be just lacking in overall resolution and detail for their pricetag, and were a little wonky through the lower treble. The mids/treble on the 600s is right in the 'Goldilocks' zone for me.

Great input. Let me add another point.

I can't remember much about Eikon. It was too long ago, and it wasn't mine. But I had the Auteur for a quite some time. The ZMFs felt closed in, and HD600 feels more open and airier. No, you're not losing out much in the highs. Actually I still prefer HD600. Less colored. Similar details.

Try the HD600 with Massdrop Velour pads.

That’s great to hear! Yeah I’ve had several ZMFs they’re more about tonality than technicality but surprising the 600s can compete at their price point. No idea they were so airy. With the right amp that could fill their bottom end that sounds like a great deal.

Burson Composer -> darkvoice (Tungsol 5998 + VT231) -> HD600 Marble + dekoni fenestrated sheepskin

Sounds awesome!
Leather pads for bass, velour for treble right?

Usually. I've never enjoyed pad-rolling with the HD6X0 series, it always compromises their already excellently engineered sound.

Yes, agree completely. Stock pads are best for sound. Why mess with long proven perfection?

Good choice with the Dekoni Fenestrated Sheepskin (and the TS 5998…). From my study/office at home:

After the above, which is excellent, the Sennheiser HD600 (Custom Cans UK mod) have never sounded more musically realistic:

This headphone continually knocks my socks off. Currently running it with a Forza Noir MkII cable from the Singxer SA-1 fed by the SMSL SU-9 dac/xDuoo x10T II (transport) combo. Best i’ve heard, and I’ve owned quite a few newer/more expensive headphones
