i tried my HD600 with the headphone outs of the elekit TU-8200R, accuphase C-265 and the small ATH-HA22tube and i think i like the elekit best. the accuphase headphone out wasn't particularly compelling for some reason. granted none of these are particularly notable headphone outputs so i'm sure i'm missing out by not having a proper tube OTL amp, but at this point i'm kind of more invested in speakers anyway and only use the headphones at my desk

Get a used Valhalla 2. About 250 bucks and good medicine for HD 600/650/6xx.

They only had SS amp in the shop and HD600 was too much for me, the bass as well was better on 650.
Mid and upper bass bump. Over time thick and syrupy, even pulls low male voices into the cavern.
I actually find my HD650 nicely driven directly from my macbook, OTL amp gives it a bit of extra bass/gets rid of a grainy texture in mids/highs, but nothing in regards of drastic changes.
What amp? BHOC w/ speedball kills my Rag 1 on the 600.

hak said: The big advantage of sennheisers is that I can listen to poor recordings and Sennheiser can beat more expensive offerings(as an example campfire cascade for me), but people claiming that these series sits in tier 1 simply haven't heard a good flagship which suits their tastes.

The 600/650 is the first stop for many. They are well better than many that cost more. They are not modern flagships - agree.

Try them with a vintage stereo amplifier or receiver, preferably a top brand name like Sansui, Pioneer, Kenwood, Marantz, etc. Must be an amp that came out between late 60s - 79, 40wpc & above. You can use the headphone output because it‘s connected to the speaker amp and has resistors inside as opposed to modern stereo amps who‘s headphone output is connected to an op-amp. With a vintage amp you’re getting the whole amp just like the speakers are and I guarantee you that your HD650 headphone will sound like the flagship model which it once was. I listen to my HD650 w/ my vintage Kenwood KA-8006 int. amp., 70wpc [1974] & they sound magnificent. Just my recommendation/ opinion.

Oooo, I would love to try them with a vintage amp or receiver..,

So would (will?) I. If a 1981 Kenwood receiver can be retrieved from my sister, it will be: vintage receiver, vintage headphones, vintage ears 😎😎😎...a sonic eclipse?...

Amplifier is feliks echo 2, I know it doesn't get the best of hd650, but still I don't see them matching todays top tier performers. If I haven't owned and heard few of them I could debate that hd650 could stand with best. From the price point HD650/600 is insane value and I don't think there are many other hp with such price/performance ratio. today market is filled with mediocre and overpriced stuff covered by glossy reviews across websites and forums, but you can get good SQ for cheap which was not possible before.

Some of the flaghsips though are in the league of their own, but they usually are crazy expensive

Finally showed up and I have been listening to the new Romanian HD600... It honestly sounds exactly as others have described it and how I assumed it would sound. I like it, different enough from the HD650 to keep, but I can definately see why many would say it is pointless to own both - as they are that similar... The HD600 sounds very "complete" in its sound signature, just in a slightly different way than the HD650.

Also, I heard a minor detail I have never heard before when listening to a few test songs... I can see why people would prefer to mix and master with these headphones - flat and non-fatiguing. It is a really sweet sound.

Yes indeed, so are the HD58x... No complaints with the new plastic / build of the Romanian version either - it feels very solid to me. I am quite pleased with these headphones.
