Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

Hard to say which one is better. HD650 is lush. HD600 is neutral. HD650 has better bass and a pleasant sound. HD600 makes female voice shines. They are more similar than different, but strangely they complement each other well.

I wont sell both.

So you would just use either one depending on the music you are listening to at that time?

Oh, thanks. Do you use balance mode?
In Jot sometimes yes, but usually not as I want to switch amp from time to time.

I see. So will the sound quality benefits from the balanced mode?
Thank you.
Not much that I can sense, probably the volume is just louder. I am using smsl su-8 where the balance output goes to Jot balance input and the su-8 SE output goes to my DV 336SE. If I want to switch amp, I just switch-off one amp and switch-on the other and vice versa.

Will try when I get home comparing the balance input of the Jot to SE input using 600 and see. When i hear that the SQ is not good, usually I found fault not due to the input I used but because of the source file I play.

I prefer the pads on my HD600 to be broken in but not flat. The sound gets bit too congested when the pads are too flat plus my ears start touching & get uncomfortable.

I have tried Brainwavz oval pleather on them with adapters but it changed the sound way too much in a negative way. The sound was distant & lost all it punch. The stock pads work best IMO.

Now that my HD600 are fully modded I use the bass boost on my FIIO Q1 mkII. With the foam removed from behind the driver’s the boost doesn’t bloat the sound like it did with the foam in. Instead, the boost just adds the bottom end that is needed with the HD600s. At home I use my Crack+SB with them.

I've looked at a lot of freq responses on a number of sites re: HD-600 in particular it was the material between the ear and the driver. You can find fabric (inc toilet paper) that reduce the highs 3-5-7 db, but they also bring up the bass (but its not clean, it's less damped, it's interesting stuff.

It ties in to the 600 v 650. The 650 has more bass, it's less damped and less clean. So you get a choice 600: 95/100 in terms of bass speed/clarity, but 82 in terms of quantity. The 650 is an 88/100 in terms of speed, but a 91 in terms of quantity. But wait: the 650 rise in the bass is an ersatz increase in quantity since the quality is cut.

In addition, there is a guaze on parts of the treble of the 650 - also ersatz IMO. I always had a poor opinion of the 650 - now its more clear why. The 650 is newer, warmer, bassier. The 600 is older, but truer.

I guess we can say HD600 is more neutral and HD650 is more of a flavor can (done right).

For rock songs, I do prefer HD650 in general. that mid-bass slam is rather satisfying. But for audiophile recordings, HD600 is "better".

I don't have a 650 to play with, but I'd be curious to know what taking the fabric/foam out of the way of the driver and ear does.

If it responds in any way similar to the HD600s then it will open up the sound, remove the veil as it is often said. I highly recommend it personally.

Any one tried these with Dekoni Elite hybrid ear pads. Does it bring down the treble to neutral with positive impact on Bass?

I’ve read many times that others feel there is a so called “veil”. But once I replaced the inner foam with nylon & removed the foam from behind the driver, I then noticed how much more “open” the HD600s sounded. Now it is not a huge difference. I would guess that it is a 15% improvement. But that is how it goes in audio. That small improvement in clarity is best described as a thin layer of material removed from what you were hearing prior. I am purposely using layman’s terms so that I hopefully make it as simple to grasp as possible :)

I never experienced any veil with my 600.

When you take off the small foam behind the drivers, does it make the treble too much? People usually do that with the 650.
