Thanks Mike! Glad you're liking them

Liking them - I'm becoming addicted!
and that's exactly what I was looking for!

I needed something that gave me the same feeling when I first started using my HD 25-1 IIs to DJ - I remember thinking:
DAMN these isolate so well for small cans, and the lower midrange is crystalline  - which is crucial for beat-matching!

and I still love those cans - but the HD7s sound like, IMO, a proper follow-up to the HD25s!

My rig w/ them today:

I was actually shopping around the $100-$150 range until I saw these on sale, if I don't buy these I'd probably just go back down to my budget range. So even with about a $100 discount, at $230 you don't think they're worth it? I haven't been able to dig up much about the HD7 because they're relatively new, but so far the reviews seem really polarized: some people thought they were fantastic (I've seen people say these beat the Senn Momentums in most areas), and others say that the sound is terrible.

How bout AKG 550, someone really helpful on headfi linked me to a good deal on a set, I've heard nothing but good things about the soundstage, and that was one of the main things I was looking for in my next pair of headphones

The k550s are not very good. HD558s are open back while HD7 DJ are closed. 558's should have the bigger soundstage.

For the DJ series vs other Senns, it seems like the DJ design features would be the difference maker. If you need DJ functionality, then the HD6/7/8s make sense. Otherwise, you're paying a premium for these and not getting the full benefit of their design.

+1 on the 550s vs the 558s.  I spent a fair amount of time comparing the 550s and the 558s with multiple genres and choose the 558.  In the end, the 558s just sounded more organic/realistic to me across the spectrum.

The 550s fit was wonky as well.  Which I guess can be fixed.  At the time, the 558s were half the price and the savings allowed me to get my Magni.  Had they both been the same price, would have still picked the Senns.  The 558s are the only set of cans I currently own that I would've gladly paid full retail for (SR60s excepted as a right of passage).

Odd thing is, I'd really like to add a mid-tier AKG but haven't been able to convince myself based on reviews/discussions (w/possible exception of the Q701s).  I'll buy one more mid-tier set before I jump to planars and am still going back and forth between the HD600, DT880, or Q701.

Fuzziekiwi, I noticed you have the 701s and rate them higher than the 558s.  I'd be curious to hear why and also how the 880s and 600s compare...if you've heard them.  Quite honestly, I'm leaning towards the HD600s even though they're more expensive.  A PM might make sense (if you have the time) so we don't derail the thread any further with non-DJ talk.  :)

Is the difference in quality and clarity ginormous from maybe the ATH M50s? Frequency response or bass performance? They seen pretty balanced and bassy though.
I do mostly monitoring, but these look like amazing headphones either way!

I tried the ATH-M50s recently, and returned them for the Sennheiser HD8 DJ. I thought the ATH-M50 had great resolution and build  quality. However, each portion of the frequency ranged didn't blend well with the others. The bass was decent, the midrange was extremely laid back, but the worse part was the high end. I'll admit, I don't really like high end, but it sounded extremely strident to me. I really wanted to like them, but because of the frequency response, along with its crushing headband, I decided to return them and look for something else.
HD8s are amazing. Bass is a bit flabby, but I don't really mind. Mids are really good, and highs cut off at around 18khz, and there the high end is very controlled. I've seen that the cutoff is hit or miss with people, but even though I'm bias cause I don't really like the high end, it's a hit. The only criticisms on the sound is really just slightly flabby bass, and 200hz-300hz are ducked a bit, causing snares to have less of an impact than kicks, but nothing that an EQ can't fix. Build quality is awesome, and although my head does hurt after wearing them for about 30 minutes, it can be easily fixed, and it hurts nowhere near as much as the M50s (M50s hurt much more after 5 minutes than HD8s hurt after 30.)
It's really up to preference. If you don't mind a lot of highs, and a very artificial sounding response, and don't mind a smaller soundstage, M50s are far cheaper, and the M50X seems a little more portable than the HD8. But if you're a DJ, or you don't like high end, but enjoy lots of bass, you'll absolutely love the HD8s.

Really? I didn't find my M50x headband crushing at all, especially after they broke in and stretched to my head. Then again, I do find the build, and even audio quality and stage to be better on the M50x than the original M50.
Regardless though, these seem like some great headphones, and I think I might experiment with them eventually when I'm in the market. I'd like to try something besides a studio monitor, something with a little bit of voice and personality, and it seems like these could fit the bill. Plus, especially the 7 and 8 look sooooo cool! I mean, dang, the biggest Beats fan couldn't deny that the 7 and 8 are sexier looking than anything they have.

I am wondering which of these modals would best fit my needs :) any help appreciated.

I would be on the go with these a lot. Are these good for portability?
I would be using these off of my cellphone with no portable amp. Would the 8's be superior over the 7's without an amp? Would 6's work with such high impedance?
Do any of these come with a 1.2m cable instead of 3? Do any have a right angle jack? (Come with or have a replacement being able to purchase separately)
I have somewhat larger ears would these be similar to the Denon D600's in size?

Thank you!

You need an amp with these headphones. They sound quite bad if you plug them directly into your cellphone.

The hd8 sounds pretty good out of a galaxy note 3 though it certainly sounds a smidge better out of a dedicated amp. Size wise, foldability and durability make it very good for tucking into a bag or jacket pocket.

Can't say anything about 8 vs 7 or anything about the 6. I believe both the 7 and 8 come with a 1.5 m coiled cable (I know the 8 does). No right angle and I haven't seen any additional cable options as of yet. The ear cups are surprisingly smaller than how they appear in photos, they fit my ears but not by a whole lot. For comparison they are slightly smaller than the hd280 ear pads (which if you have no personal experience with Best Buy often has them on display).
