HD7 and HD8 sounded the same to me. Prob makes money sense to go with HD7 since they are cheaper.

The k550s are not very good. HD558s are open back while HD7 DJ are closed. 558's should have the bigger soundstage.

What is the connector on the headphone earcup? Would it be possible to get a momentum cable to work with these?
YES! I don't know the termination name - but I'm using my Double Helix Cables Molecule Elite here by @scootermafia for my Momentums on the HD7s!

Today my HD8's where delivered to the radio station where I work, so here are my "First Impressions"....
- Just like everyone says: GREAT build quality, with a very tactile quality
- I like the way they feel when I put them on AND when I'm just holding them
- Since I am usually rushing to put them on before broadcast, and rushing to take them off after a segment, it's nice that there are so many joints that give easily
- Bassy? ha, yep... I almost feel like I'm a kid with one of those headphones that Apple just bought lol
- Packaging is great, storage zipper case is nice!
- They really give you bang-for-your-buck with the extra ear-pads, the two cables, and that is how it should be!

Yeah I loved the 8s - just found the lower midrange in the 7s a little sweeter and closer to my beloved HD 25-1 IIs!
But those should be wicked for radio stuff!
I'm rockin em w/ my McIntosh D100 right now and it sounds fantastic!
Bumpin the new Atmosphere LP - Southsiders and the soundstage is widening as they break-in - plus the bass response
is getting even more punchy and tight. The mids are crisp - and they are KILLER in your hands!
Bringin' em to T.H.E Headphonium at T.H.E Show Newport end of the month for SURE!!!!

Using my calibrated Smyth Realiser -mics in ear, zero compensation. Measured with perfect fit on my head, so includes small HRTF/pinna-effect, but bass etc will be true to life. Driven by Benchmark DAC2.
These are stock pleather pads. I've also measured the velour ones, there aren't really differences outside error margings, so not included here. Small graph is unsmoothed. For anyone interested, I'm providing whole full REW measurement mdats (link).
THD etc are excellent, at around 90dB, less than ~0.2% everywhere. Even 20hz at ~0.5%. No ringing etc seen.
For reference, comparison with HD800 and Aurvana Live. So uh yeah we are looking at -10dB comparatively >3kHz. Which of course is not a bad thing for your hearing, when banging EDM at high volumes.. (edit: added HD600 comparo)
Isolation looks super effective. Tried also HD7 with velour pads, isolates maybe slightly less by few dB.
