What sources exactly will you be plugging the headphones into?
PC on-board audio?

Really depends on what sound signature you're looking for. People here will tell you different things, and its all subjective.

To me, the X1 is ahead of the HD598's. Not by much though. X1 has deeper bass, better impact, better timbre, and less emphasized highs.

The HD598's may sound lacking for rock.

The X1 is more engaging down low, the 598 is more acoustic and light sounding. If you want a more intense experience, snag the former. If not, the latter. Also, I think listening volume should be considered.

  yep, pc on-board audio.

Depending on the quality of your motherboard's on-board audio, you might look into something like the Schiit Fulla or FiiO E10K, both are USB-DAC-amps, they might offer a little (or fairly decent) improvement, over on-board audio, for music.

i'm gonna go with FiiO E10K cause it's fairly cheap.

I've read some reviews about the sennheiser hd 598 and they say it's "slow". What do they mean by slow?

I own the HD558, same 50-Ohm drivers as the HD598.
I would say the audio is slightly detached, like your sitting more in the back row of a music concert, but everything is clear.

Slow means a slow decay.  That is true to a large degree of this can.  You can't have the velvet smooth Senn veil in a fast can.  If you like like fast music like EDM, there are probably better choices for you.
