I would tend to agree. I've had a set of 595s for about 3 weeks and without an amp the sound is pretty disappointing. With an amp I find them to be very satisfying. I tend to agree that the sound has improved over the first 60-80 hrs of listening (work has gotten in the way) as well but it could be wishful thinking since I don't have a brand new pair to compare them with.

im running my 595s unamped out of an Audigy1 right now. They sound fairly good to me. Using the 120ohm version too. I can only compare them to the Hd280, and Sony V6s. With all the complaining about unamped 595s, I can't wait for how it'll sound with my PIMETA coming soon!

I agree

I'm a rock/metal person, that's what I listen to at least 90% of the time. When I got the 595 they sounded good, not great, but good. With the burn in they got better, but they still sounded lifeless. I got the Grado 225 to cure that and they definitely did, but the low bass on the 225 was very lacking. I finally got an amp, the 225s gained a little low end but not all that much, but the 595s really turned around. The midbass jumped up, the highs opened up, they really sounded much better. My listening tastes haven't changed at all, but I now listen to my 595s much more than the 225s. It was quite the opposite before the amp, amazing how it can change things.

i always think sr225 is better than hd595. more lively and sound more natural than hd595 . you most likely like more bass.

The HD595 does NOT have exaggerated bass btw.

Here, the HD595 can sound great 'unamped', it just depends on the source I guess.

And a 'tentative' "absolute" answer: HD595 / SR325i / HD600 > SR225. Just to let you know, I've not heard most of these.

I compared the HD595 with my portable and home sources - though the portable one is 'weak' in output power, it even surpassed the 'home' one for bass-mid-treble balance (apart from the lower bass presence), while on my 'home' amp the 'aplomb' and refinement are far superior. I know I'd need a good dedicated amp...

Out of all those, the HD-600 benefit the most from a good amp, in my experience. I've heard the 225, but not enough to really have an opinion. But I am familiar enough with the 325i and HD-595. I found the 595s to be fairly picky about amplification. But in my opinion, they went from being a mediocre headphone to being a decent headphone, so the range was quite narrow. I found the 325i's to be less amp dependent than either the 595s or 600s.

sr225 is indeed more lively but its also more colored. sr225 is more upfront, has more impact, exaggerated highs, and really nice guitar plucks. 595 is better in comfort, soundstage, vocals, deeper bass, less fatiguing, smoother sound. Now that we have sony sa series, I'm afraid grado might become obsolete. sa have the upfront fast sound of grado while being better built, more attractive, much more comfortable, less fatiguing, and actually have a soundstage. gg grado
