This thread is actually for a friend. He asked me what I thought, and seeing how I have no experience with the 580's, I couldn't help him out. Right now HD-580's are available NEW through various eBay sellers with the warranty and K601's are everywhere. Both are close to his budget ($200, give or take a little).

Not asking which one is "better", just curious as to what the main differences are and what kind of sound to expect from both.

Thanks so much!

Head-Fi is the only place to ask a specific question like this one. I appreciate this place.

Look out for any HD-600 vs K601 threads. They are relevant to your question. I posted my impressions in one of those threads (note: I have both phones and have first-hand experience); it's just that I can't remember which thread it was.

edit: found it

My take on K601 (vs HD-600):
+ Smoother and nicer mids
+ More expansive soundstage
+ Agile and articulate bass, with IMO better low-end extension
+ If powered adequately, can be very open- and transparent-sounding

- Bass can be too lean for some
- More analytical / less warm and less engaging
- Less efficient, thus more demanding, in terms of power
- Harder to change cables (unlike Senn's 'plug-and-play' cables)

I still prefer the more euphonic HD-650 and K340 though.

I'm amazed at how much more expensive the HD600's are compared to the HD580's. Saying that I'd be hard pushed to find the HD580's new in the UK, so I can't comment on the price difference here. However I guess you could look into the HD595's too, but I know nothing on how they compare sound-wise to the HD580's.

Don't know what the 580s sound like, but Zorander's assessment of the K601 sound is spot on. Even when under-powered, I enjoy the delicate detail and round sound of these cans. And soundstage is wide and really amazing for headphones.
