I go on 4chan every day, and whenever I see the Sennheiser HD598 mention I see the "foam mod" mention. Something about making the Sennheiser HD558 sound exactly like the HD598. I'm skeptical and curious at the same time. I'd like to get the best headphone but I'm curious to know if anyone hear has ever heard of the foam mod.

Glad to see Im not the only one that doesnt fall for /g/s arguments that Head-Fi doesnt know anything. 
 
Glad to report that I to will be ordering a pair of HD558s, most likely within the next week, but I will probably perform the foam mod on my set. I also hope to be connecting them to a Schiit Magni + Modi stack, I recently graduated high school and my parents will be getting me the stack as a gift.

I'm going to be just using my pair out of my iPod. It seemed to work fine when I did that with my AKG K240. The Sennheiser is lower impedance than the AKG anyways so I figure it won't matter.

Well Im looking to use mine for not only music but some light gaming as well. I want the amp because getting it sooner will open my options further for higher impedence headphones like orthos in the future.
 
But I will most likely also be running them from my Galaxy S4 for some music as well.
 
Just incase you didnt know, the HD558 has a removeable cable which terminates with a 6.4mm  plug, but it comes with an adapter for 3.5mm jacks. Unfortunately the side of the cable that goes into the headphone is a 2.5mm jack, so a normal headphone cable cannot be used. I personally will be purchasing this cable from Amazon at the same time I purchase the headphones, it is a 2.5mm to 3.5mm cable, that way I can bypass the bulky adapter and 6.4mm termination.

Watch an unboxing video of the HD558s and you will understand.
 
The size of the headphone jack on your iPod is a 3.5mm female jack, only a 3.5mm male jack and be inserted into it and work. The end of the cable that comes with the HD558s has a 6.3mm male jack, which will not work with a 3.5mm female. But it comes with a rather bulky adapter that changes the end of the cable from the 6.3mm male to a 3.5mm male so it can be used with your iPod, but both the adapter and the normal end of the cable combined is almost 3 inches long, very bulky.
 
I would suggest getting this cable from Amazon, which is a 2.5mm male jack, that can work with the female end on the HD558s, and it ends in a 3.5mm male, which will go into your iPod. That way you dont have to deal with the 3 inches of termination and adapter to use the HD558s with your iPod.

Foam mod is pretty well known with the hd555/558, I did it with my hd555 when I still had them. There was an improvement but I wasn't too impressed with the hd555 overall so I traded them away. The hd558 are a nice improvement from the hd558 from what I've read. Still haven't given them a listen but they look lovely, I like the look of grill mods with the hd555/558.

Most of the HD558 threads talk about the foam mod, most like it some are not impressed. I have been using them for a couple of months but still haven't done the mod. I personally feel that an amp/dac really brings the best out of the 558s. Mine sounded good with a Fiio E7. They sound amazing with my new Aune T1 tube dac/amp. Let us know if you try the foam mod and what you think.

Hey I said I didn't understand what you meant by this yesterday because I was tired. Let me know if this works out for you. I think I'd be interested in a cord that terminates with a 3.5mm too.

What I don't understand is if that piece of foam makes the headphones sound worse then why is it there in the first place? Is it truly there to make the HD598 a better deal?
