i'm pretty much decided on Sennheisers, as I really like the sound they produce. I'm all about the details of the music, i listen to stuff like squarepusher, aphex twin, bach, sigur ros, tortoise, etc. Stuff that has a lot of details that are just absolutely vital to the music.

i've narrowed it down to the 555's and the 595's. I have a pretty good ear for sound quality but i'm far from a hardcore audiophile, and i've got a fantastic high-powered reciever...do you think its worth twice the price for the 595's? I'm willing to do it if there is a significant difference between the two, but only if it really is quite significant.

Also, if you really think I should go with something else altogether, I'm all ears. This is my first purchase of high-quality headphones...I've always used my old school JBL L65 speakers and pioneer reciever, but they're too big and loud for a dorm room.

Thanks for your help!

I recently made the switch from the 555 to the 595. I'm very glad that I did it and wish I had gone with the 595 to start with instead of going through the hassle of buying and selling the 555.

I never had the opportunity to compare them side-by-side (sold the 555 before I got the 595 in my hands), but for me, the difference is significant. Bass is fuller and overall sound is richer to my ears. (My main complaint with the 555 was that the bass lacked the impact I was looking for.) The 595 headband is also more comfortable, the headphone looks nicer, and it comes with a handy-dandy hanger too. I can't say whether the sonic differences are worth the extra money, but the overall package is worth it IMO.

BTW, I just noticed that you live in a dorm? The Senns are open cans, so they're going to leak and let in a lot of sound. You might want to consider getting a closed can instead.

I doubt it'll be an issue unless he really likes cranking the volume. And no matter what, they'll be many orders of magnitude more polite than using speakers.

Where is there such a price difference? I didn't search a lot but for example at Meier-Audio they're $165 and $230. A big difference but nowhere near twice the price.

555 is 110$ on ebay vs 180$ for the 595.

Almost double.... sort of.

I should have mentioned this from the start, but I'm studying in Australia, and I'll be here until July. Thus, I'm at the mercy of the Australian market, which is different than in the states. It's not worth it to buy from the states and have them shipped here because the shipping is enormous and i'm too impatient to wait out the long shipping time

Headphone.com may not be the cheapest in the world, but they ship anywhere for the same rate. Might be cheaper in the long run that ordering from an Aus dealer.

Not if they ship by Fedex, as I believe they do. In OZ Fedex is subject to enormous import duty. (I paid $90 on a $400 phone).
