I have an old pair of 1974(I think) Sennheiser HD-424s, quite beat up, but they still sound quite nice. They have been modified to be around ear. I have decided on the Audio-Technica ATH AD-700s as the best option for 100 dollars to replace my Sennheisers. What I'm wondering is, how much better would these sound than what I have now? Would they sound 100 dollars better?

To some the AD700 may sound $0 better or $100 worse. To others the AD700 may sound $100 better or $200 better. You with your own equipment and music are different than everyone else. So who should you believe but with your own ears? You already have high regard and like the sound of your HD424. So you probably value it more than $0, maybe $50? And, what's $100 worth to you? For some, $100 isn't much at all to find out how the AD700 compares. And anyway, at the very worse you could sell the AD700 as lightly used for close to what you paid for it. So why not try it out and see for yourself?

AD700 hits the sweet spot in price/performance ratio in AT's lineup. As long as you're enjoying them at home, that is
