True, Europeans have an easier choice here!

We Yanks must suffer the pangs of indecision more fully in this instance. At least our gas is cheaper!!

I personally wouldn't use the 250-80s for mixing, as blr said ; the mix would end up sounding too harsh (due to the rolled off high end of the 250-80s) the 770pros are much better suited.

What do you mean by "rolled off high end"?
Do I take this to mean that the Senn 280 goes higher? Or are the highs simply more pronounced? I have a bit of hearing loss in the upper frequencies. I was thinking that phones that have more pronounced highs would be better for me. I wrote to Headroom about the availability of the 280's and mentioned that I was interested in them and the Beyer 250-80. I said I preffered more pronounced highs and good detail. Thier answer was that I should get the 250-80.

Sorry about resurecting this old thread. I couldn't help myself.

That was Todd's (@ HeadRoom) advice to me as well. I already own a pair of the 250/80's and called Todd to ask about the Senn. He knows what my taste is and said the Senn 280's were "muffled" by comparison to the Beyers. Now he could have told me to get the 280's and he would have sold a pair of headphones, but he advised me to stick with the Beyers that I already had. I trust his judgement. He decided to forego a sale to tell me the truth. I appreciate advice like that!

ok, for the record I haven't heard the 280s so I can't comment on their upper range performance.

But when I compare the 250-80s to my other Beyers, they don't have the same upper range response/sound.
It's not so much lacking as less pronounced or less up front.

If I do an instant switch from the 250-80s to the 831 or 770pro after some extended listening, I cringe at how harsh the highs appear to be (much less so with the 770)

There's certainly nothing wrong with the 250-80 high end, it's there, it's clear, it's just not "in your face(ears)" so much as the others. The 250-80s certainly don't sound muffled (unless you're used to an extremely up front sound).

My girlfriend has my 250-80s now, I use my 770pros or my HP890s most of the time, she much prefers the slightly less pronounced high end that the 250-80s.

With that in mind, and my hearing on the weak side above 8khz do you think I should look for something more up front in the highs? I don't have any good headphones now and there is nowhere within 200 miles to listen to any quality phones.

Ok, if we're talking Beyers it really depends on what you're after.
The 250-80 is a good all-rounder, driven well from a non-amped source but sounding better from an amplified source. Good, relaxing sound excellent for extended periods.
The 831 is a more analytical headphone, more revealing, less bass response and more up-front presentation of high-end. Better driven with an amp, non amped sources won't really do it justice.
The 770pro is a mix of both with it's own special characteristics - the high end being more forward than the 831 but not as laid back as the 250-80, the midrange/vocals having a slight dip and he bass response being probably the best I've ever heard. Better driven with an amp as per 831.

All 3 have their own characteristics, I like the 770pro most, then the 250-80 and then the 831, mainly because the 831 is a little too revealing and analytical for my tastes in music.

Hope this helps a little

Hm.. wait a sec, I just reread my post and realise that I misrepresented the 770pro - the high end is NOT more forward than the 831, I think I meant to say more forward but not as much so as the 831.

I also forgot to mention that the 831 is definately the technically better headphone, but I personally don't like the way it sounds as much as I like the other 2.

Sorry for the mixup!

So the 831 is more analytical and most forward in the highs, then the 770pro then the 250-80. To be honest the 770pro is on my short list.

Thanks for all your help Snufkin.
