Hmmm, these sound to be better than any of the beyers. How do they compare to the DT770 pro? Also they are a good bit cheaper than the beyers too, maybe these should be my next headphone purchase.

Does sennheiser make these anymore? I couldn't find them on their website!

Anymore? They just started making them about 6 months ago.

If you confirm you are listenning in a not too loud level, it seems that the only possible problem is on your headphone.

and thanks to 'delenda est Sony' for your kind comment.

Yep, Sennheiser with that genius for promotion that has served them so well,

has cleverly not listed the 280s on their site, though they still have full details on their popular (not!) 490 phones. Headphone.com sells the 280s as do other Yahoo vendors and (at least in my case) the local Virgin Megastore. I like these phones more and more. They have edged the V6 on my listening preference roster, which is no mean feat.

I guess the outcome here is that Trancegeek has gotten a bad set of phones. Contact Senn and they'll fix things up. I hope you'll try another pair of 280; they really are great phones when everything is working...

delanda, I've been thinking about the 280s myself. Where would you put them in comparison to the 497s? I've been wanting something a bit warmer sounding but still clear, detailed and with a good soundstage. I thought about the V6 but the analytical sound and flat soundstage comments have put me off.

They are listed, but not in a series. You have to look under "studio" in the product index.

Hamsterball_Z, maybe to help you with your decision, I am considering replacing my 497's with a pair of HD280's. The 497's are built like ****. Mine are falling apart. These sound wonderful right now.

Violeta, what happened to the Philips 890? I thought you were considering those. They wouldn't be my next choice so I'm not surprised if you changed your mind.

Looks like the 497 crew is all going to the 280 then.

Hamster---

the 280s are very persuasive headphones. At first I thought they were rather similar to the V6s, but over time they are differentiating themselves. They are more comfortable, lighter (though larger) and handle treble better than the V6s. With a minimal burn-in, the soundstage is noticeably broader and low bass shows better articulation than the Sonys. The 280s also handle really challenging music better than the Sonys. They are analytical in a sense, but I would call them more musical than the Sonys.

Versus the 497s, a tougher call. They handle bass a bit better than the 497s and handle treble just as well. They are also a lot better built. If you want closed phones, than get the 280s. If you want phones that will completely beat the 497s, well, I wouldn't exactly say that is the 280s, especially considering the price difference. As I said, the 280s are great closed phones, and if you love good solid bass but wanted something more musical than the V6 and cheaper than the Beyer 250s. you should get the 280s. Hope this helps!

nah, in terms of bang for the buck, the V6s are still the champs. I got mine for $57 total, just about half the cost of the Senns. The Senns are worth the extra money to some degree, but they're not twice as good. And the V6s have a classy retro feel to them. are more readily portable, and actually have some metal in them. More than enough to make these one of the better values in headphones. And they may well be the last decent phones Sony makes for less than $100; hence my screenname!
