hey guys

i'm new, and my knowledge about headphones is minimal.

so, i decided to get a good pair of headphones and went with the 595s. I had previously owned a pair of 202s, and i was dissappointed when i first listened to the 595s; they didn't seem to be much better than the 202s, and i wonder why this is. The bass seems to be weaker, and the quality overall was not that much better.

any advice?

The reason that it sounded better was because the HD-202 puts out a massive amount of bass, while the HD-595 does not. This doesn't make it worse, and for some it's better. However, listen to the soundstage, your perception of where sounds are coming from. Listen for the detail, and listen for the quality of the mids.

If you're still not happy, it's because there's not enough bass. The mid-range headphones for you are the Beyerdynamic DT-770

Hi,

I agree with Espire. The bass in the HD202 is - not to mince words - horrendously bloated. I had a pair for casual listening and it was a very disappointing headphone on account of the bass which all but drowns out everything else. In that price range, not only is the HD201 far more clear and accurate, but it's much more comfortable to boot owing to the larger ear cups.

So it isn't so much that the 595 lacks bass, more that it is much more accurate in this department. Unfortunately if one gets used to the sound of an HD202, then nothing else will sound right and everything will sound like it has no bass! Luckily, human hering can re-adjust over time. So I suggest giving them a few weeks.

I personally don't like the HD595 either, because it has a very wide but relatively two dimensional soundstange compared to any other Sennheiser from HD555 upwards, but also because the sound is pretty grainy - it has a lot of trouble accurately reproducing the timbre of acoustic orchestral instruments, but is OK for electronic stuff.
