Sennheiser 555 or Alessandro MS1? Upgrading my Senn 497!

I'm not really sure why you guys are comparing the 555s with the 480s. Many agree that it's more forward and less veiled than other Senns.

Can anyone fill me in on the performance of the MS1 at electronica, hip-hop, dance, etc.?

The MS-1 is generally regarded as fairly competent with those genres, though perhaps not if you want accentuated bass.

Yes, you can't change your internal soundcard, but you can easily work around it, for instance with a USB dac or external soundcard. There are options under $100 that could really change your listening experience, and open up the capabilities of the new headphones you're going to buy.

? Are you talking about this thread? What's a 480?

edit-- you think he meant a 485, gazwsx? But nobody mentioned one of those either. Maybe he meant SR-80? I think it's just confusion.

by the way, shampoo, I'd recommend getting an MS-1 over an HD555 without question, but really think of getting an external sound card as well. I see a used bithead in the fs forum for $125, add in a pair of MB QP55x from that ebay clearance house that has them, and you're barely over $150, with a system to humble an HD555 straight out of your mac.

Because the next up after the 485's (I assume that's what you mean) is the 555. Of course you must skip the 515 because it sounds like it's $20.

I can vouch for HD555 - decent all rounder specially considering you're not using an amp. But I have the feeling that most people will recommend the MS-1 over the HD555 especially if rock is your favourite.

Yup; and yup!

Yup; they come with comfies alright. And they feel exactly like Grados...cause the ARE Grados! They're just tuned to sound a little differently than the other Grados.

Thankfully, pads are relatively inexpensive and can easily be swapped around for just the right combination of comfort andperformance!

From posts I've read, most prefer the sound of MS1s over the SR80s. They say that 80's treble is a little too harsh.

Thank you for the suggestions! I do have a budget. However, I will definitely look into getting an external sound card. I'm quite ignorant about this whole sound card/amp business, but isn't the Bithead an amp? Are there any sound cards you would recommend that I could look into?

The bithead is an amp, but it also has a built in DAC (digital-analog converter). This is exactly what a sound card does (DACing and amplifying) (and why your conputer will recognize it as a sound card). It attaches to your computer through the USB connection.
As such, any USB DAC will work as an external soundcard for pretty much any computer, and there are several at many prices. Search the forums and you will find a ton of information.
I can't weigh in on the ms1 vs 555 since I haven't heard either one, sorry.

I put about 300 hours on the HD555 and only 3 hours or so with the MS1, but:

- MS1 is massively better for rock. Guitars etc sound synthetic to me on 555s.
- 555 probably better for dance/electronica
- MS1 are pretty comfortable, but you can wear 555 for 12 hours a day!

It's important to remember that both are different and many people own both, so I wouldn't worry too much about making the 'right' decision here. I'd bet you would be very happy with either of them, and who knows, in a few months' time you might have another $100 to spare for the other set.
