Is this a reasonably powered combo? I have read that it clips at high volumes, but I don't plan to blast my ears. I would like a very high quality (albeit ipod

) but portable solution. The cans will obviously be the largest part, but I would also use the mini amp with other more portable fones for traveling and such.

Any other suggestions for a miniamp?

you know the hd650s are open right? i'd only use them in places of complete silence to fully enjoy them.
also i remember messing around with my brother's airhead (he had the older model). i remember being dissappointed with it, but that's only comparing them with my home amps.

No offense to HeadRoom but "Total Airhead" and "very high quality" don't go together, and that's way below scale for the HD650. Aim higher. If size is one of your main concerns, I'd wait for the HeadAmp Pico - very small but with specs (and sound) that belie its size.

Yeah.. Headroom seems to over hype their products just a bit..

Er, I was quoting the OP, not HeadRoom's print on their site. FWIW I don't think HeadRoom overhypes its products. Well they certainly try to sell them on their site, but overhype, not really.

Welcome to head-fi, natelam!

Before you settle on the 650s (which are one of my favorite headphones) and the airhead (an adequate first amp) you might want to do some more research into what the 650s really need in terms of amplification. They weren't really made for portability, and really require a more powerful amp than ones such the airhead. There are some portable/transportable amps that are better than others, and some are dang nice, but none, imo, are great with the 650s. Though you can enjoy the 650 sound, they really sound best with home amp. There are also some excellent sounding headphones available that aren't as hard to drive as the Senns, so you might want to look into that as well.

Although I'm personally prejudiced against the 650s and portable amps, I also understand that this pairing may be what's best for you at this time. If you're set on both a portable amp and the 650s, I suggest checking out a mini^3 from Rockhopper Audio, and choose the higher gain option. It runs about $125 and will do a better job than most, if not all, in that price range.

Good luck!

X2 with boomana.

I use my AKG701's with a meier move for hotel listening when traveling and it does sound good, but it is nowhere near the level of the 701 with a good home amp like the DV 337 or the meier Cantate.

I would sugest you read the thread on the yuin PK1 and mini box 3 combo special at 249.00

I can't comment on the minibox but I had the yuins with the meier move and it was a killer combo.

The yuins would give you a lot more portability and would be very satisfying musically.

That would give you time to shore up your wallet for the plunge into the 650's , home amp, home dac, cdp, wi-fi streamer.
Of course you will go bankrupt antway but it might take a while longer :-)

I don't have the Total Airhead but I do have the Total Bithead and assuming the output is similar it will struggle to drive the HD650 to what I consider low to medium volume. It is okay with IEMs, I've used it with my UM2, Triple Fi, and ER-4Ps and get pretty good results, and higher efficiency headphones should also be okay, certainly my PortaPros work.
I can't recommend a better portable amp for the Senns as I only use them at home.

The iBasso T2 is about the same price as the Total AirHead, is highly touted by ALOaudio.com, and has internal, rechargable batteries. Not to mention, it comes in three flavors; white, black, and chrome.

Correction - I tried the Bithead with the HD650 this morning. SQ was okay and it did drive them to medium volumes quite well.

I think I may have had a dead cell in the Bithead when I tried it before.
