I'm back! (I haven't posted in years), anyway, when I read comments on HD650's, people discuss them as being "brighter" than HD600's but no one seems to rate them as "better".
I own some HD600's which I'm pretty happy with, are the HD650's an "upgrade" or are they just "different"?

I listen to mostly electronic, ambient or new wave genre's (delerium, enigma, ladytron, depeche mode, smiths). I'm looking for more clarity or something more musical. More bassy wouldn't really do anything for me. Would buying HD650's be a waste?

I own both and it is a tough call between the two. I probably like the HD-600 a little better right now, and I don't think you'd gain much from going to a HD-650.

From your description, a Beyerdynamic DT880 might be a great fit for you.

I don't own either, but I tried them both at the Chicago meet recently. I really liked the HD650 much more than the HD600. The 600 didn't really impress me at all. I mean, they sounded nice, but that's it. I tried the HD650 from my iPod w/LOD to Cmoy and I was blown away with how much better it was than the 600. I can only imagine how they sound properly amped.

Based on the many threads on this topic it is hard to describe one as better than the other. They do have different sounds with the 650 being more refined and darker. Some certainly like this sound while almost an equal number prefer the more neutral 600. I listen to my 650 and 580 about the same amount.

I like the HD650 more, a little more mellow, deeper bass, I like to chill

Well there's your issue. When properly amped the HD600s have deep and tuneful bass whilst the 650s just fart all over the place.

Why does it work that way....? People prefer the less expensive model headphones. This is why I can't be on head-fi too long. It'll consume my time from reading reviews and whatnot.

Honestly I probably couldn't tell the difference between the HD650/600. I just ended up buying the HD650 because the HD600 has a weird paintjob.

But I will have to find a chance to demo the HD600s sometime.

Right now I am VERY happy with my HD650s and I couldn't see myself much happier.

P.S. I'm such a NOOB...

It's not that the HD-600 is a lesser model. At one time, it was Sennheiser's top of the line headphone. Before that, the HD-580 was tops. Sennheiser made a few changes to the formula for the HD-650.

I do love the HD-650, as well. It is a great headphone, but there's still something special about its predecessor. I've had the HD-650 over two years, but saw a clean used HD-600 turn up and grabbed it. Probably overkill to have both, but I love listening to them.

I'd care to disagree. That might be the impression of an improperly amped HD650, not one that gets good treatment. The HD650 extends lower in the bass and has a very smooth sound compared to the punchier HD600, but neither headphone "farts all over the place".

Yeah the DT880's sound exactly like what I'm looking for. I also own an MG head OTL MKIII which sounds like a good match for these phones.

I'm quite confused though over the different versions of DT880's.

the hd600 maybe less than the hd650 but not by much. right now they are basically tied in price. i scooped up the hd600s LOVE THEM! after i swapped the cables LOVED EM even more.
i think the biggest drawback on the hd600 is its weak stock cable. never heard the hd650s but i can't complain and i'm very happy with my hd600s
