Senn HD598 vs Beyer DT 880 250ohm for an overwhelmed beginner

  1. Shagatron
Hi guys! Long time lurker, first time poster. I want to go ahead and apologize right now because variations of this question have been asked numerous times throughout these forums, but I'm sort of at a point where I just want to lay down and cry from being so overwhelmed from all of the info out there.
I've been planning to jump into the hi-fi pool after the holidays. After all of the reading, reviews, youtube videos, comparisons, charts, etc., I found what I thought would be a perfect first set-up for my budget and interests. I knew that, without a doubt, I was going to pick up a set of Sennheiser HD598s and a Schiit Magni/Modi stack as a desktop set-up for my PC. While the introduction of the Schiit Vali is an interesting new variable in the equation, the thing that just ruined everything and left me an empty husk is seeing that this Beyerdynamic 880 250ohm is going to be on an Amazon flash sale tomorrow. Right now they are retailing for $283, which was enough of a price difference from the HD598s for me to not consider, but this sale might make them within reason.
I appreciate warm bass but definitely do not consider myself a basshead. I listen to some smoother electronic stuff (No wubwub), some punk rock, but mostly a lot of hipster singer-songwriter stuff. Here's my bandcamp collection.
Anyone have any thoughts on these two since they might both be within the same ballpark price tomorrow? Also for anyone interested, the sale will be at 8:50pm eastern time. Thank you for reading my word vomit. I will appreciate anyone's thoughts on this because my brain can't do thoughts any more.

Given the choice, I would take the DT880 every time. The HD598 is a good headphone, but frankly, I would prefer to have a headphone that can perform low frequencies as well as it's other frequencies. The DT880 does that. The HD598, at least to me, lacks in the low frequencies.
Another player to add to this line up is the Hifiman HE-300. It will be $150 from Head Direct from Friday to Monday.

    +1 on the DT880s

Ohh yeah, the he-300 and 400 is 100 off. That's really something, you will like never find them at such low prices. Personally, I don't really like the dt880. It's kinda artificial and bright IMO.

The DT880 is in a different league compared to an HD598 in my opinion. If you can get it with marginal price difference, I'd say it's a no-brainer.

Thanks so much for the responses, guys! I'll take a look at the HEs, but I think I'll probably snag the Beyers since they are a lot more of a name brand and this is my first set. Happy Thanksgiving and even Happier Black Friday sales to everyone!

Beyer is not a bigger brand name.
And brand name has nothing to do with quality when it comes to their prosumer mass produced marketed headphones. A good example is Sennheiser. They make about 5 really good headphones, in my opinion, out of their line-up that probably is in the 3 digits or more, and the rest are just niche products trying to compete and really just junk. A good brand name still produces bad quality equipment for the mass market. Don't rely on a brand name to deliver something good to you just because of the name. You need to have scrutiny and look at the real world review and opinion of experienced people who have no affiliation to said brand, and who are fair and compare them to other equivocal headphones.
And at the end of the day, go for what has the features and has the idea of the sound that you want to hear, not what someone else wants to hear. Just because everyone likes A & B doesn't mean you will like it. You may prefer F and G.

Those 880 250ohm linked in your post are listed at $234 right now.

One thing I found when buying my 880 250ohm cans on Amazon I that the price roles. The 880 250ohm Premium went from $350 down to $244. The price dropped incrementally. Keep watching them. Strike when the iron is hot!

As a first time buyer and as someone who lives nowhere near a hi-fi shop to test this stuff out at, brand carries a lot of weight for me. It's certainly not 100%, I mean I'm not dumb enough to buy Bose, but knowing that Beyer is this legendary and well-regarded German brand and Hifiman is this Chinese brand whose products get a lot of mixed reviews, I sort of want to go with the safe bet. I also check out this place a lot whenever I'm internet window-shopping because there are a lot of people here that really know what they are talking about, hence this post! I'd love to check out a variety of brands and to test drive them all, but I just don't have the money to order them all or live anywhere near a place that I could sample any of them. The only thing near me is a Best Buy and it seems to only carry Beats.

Doing so as diligently as I can!

What are those 5? I can only think of 3 really good headphones from Sennheiser, HD600, HD800 and HE-90

    Hd650? Hd700?
