Hey
smily_headphones1.gif

I'm looking to get my first decent headphones soon (upgrading from ipod standards).. i was almost sold on HD555 because they were the best of the ones i've tried up till now (only Sennheiser models).

Then i found a retailer with many more to try, but littered throughout their forums are posts slamming pretty much all Sennheiser models (555 and 595 mainly) in favour of the AD700's or MS-1. The site is www.headphones.com.au if anyone's interested.

I know there's various threads discussing these models, but none have really addressed my specific music tastes. Basically i want these for listening to stuff like NIN, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Rammstein, Faith No More, Alice Cooper, Nirvana, Guns 'n Roses and i enjoy a bit of Aphex Twin here and there too.

So does anyone have any impressions of those models in relation to that?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks! That sounds pretty definitive. One thing i wasn't really clear on was where i'll be using them. Predominantly i'll be listening using my iPod - typical

. But also on my iMac and work PC. I've read conflicting opinions of the MS-1's 'needing' an amp for a portable? I've seen just the prices of amp's and don't think i'll be getting one anytime soon! What exactly does it mean when people say 'drive' the headphone? Is that in reference to power or volume or something else? Cheers

No problem at all using an MS-1 without an amp. Sounds great on my old PCDP, the kids Nuvos' or the wifes iPod, or on all of our PCs.

Where the question could come in would be the comments that some folks make about them sounding better with an amp. And yeah; they do. But almost every set of cans can sound better with an amp. These guys though, sound great without an amp, unlike a lot of phones that absolutely need one.

Considering the comfort I would probably choose the 555s.

Consider comfort, AD700 will beat HD555.

MS-1 is definitely a good choice, as long as you are not looking for soundstage.

Maybe I should do a small comparison b/w MS-1 and AD700 when I have the time, will be fun

MMMM....Music that surrounds and envelops you sounds out of this world. I wish I could envision that with my humble 75's right now.

Not to mention that gaming would be awesome w these.
