i'm not looking for unnaturally amped bass response, just good normal bass, and i want to purchase hd555s. but i'm wary because of all the concern over sennheiser bass. probably worrying too much and would likely be perfectly happy with these, but i'm looking for some reassurance.

HD555s not the bassy can. Probably you should take a look on Senn HD650s if you prefer Senn laid back sound.

just curious.. have you tried HD555s?

imo it has nice bass but not like the slam bass from HD650s or Beyer DT770s.

if you tried them and don't like it, probably DT770s is your choice. (price is in the same range as HD555s.)

However, for me HD555s has more balance sound not too laid back like other Senns and not too bassy like HD650s.

i haven't tried them, but i'd like to. i plan to if i can before deciding. i think i'll look at koss' porta/sporta-pros too. i wish there were "audiophile," comfortable sport headphones. i have a pair of sennheiser pmx60s that i bought under that impression, but while they have the famous sennheiser mix clarity, they're like listening through tin cans, with sub-96kbps mp3 quality sound. they're the most comfortable sport headphones i've used, though.

it's embarrassing, but i've been using a pair of sony mdr-g72 until they wore out. they aren't comfortable with extended listening, but i could deal with it because they have pretty great bass and overall sound for lowend headphones. some reviewers have claimed otherwise, maybe i don't have the requisite comparison experience. but if there are similarly great lowend headphones that i don't know about, let me know. i want to go highend, but i'd love to have them compact, portable and comfortable.

The bass response on the HD555s really isn't all that bad, especially if you're just looking for natural bass-- it's not going to overpower you, but it's certainly not shabby. iGrados are very good cans for the price as well though.
