What are the difference other than the price? Are they using the same driver?
Currently Im eyeing HD25, but due to its steep price I might opt for HD25SP.

The drivers are different (in addition to the physical differences in the headband etc).

See the Sennheiser website for specification and you'll see they are different.

I have some SP's and even after recabling (the stock steel cable is robust... That's about it) I don't really like the sound from them. They sound closed and boomy with little soundstage/separation. They're great for DJ cue monitoring, but not really for listening to music I'm afraid.

Without hearing the non-SP models, I can't comment on the differences, but a LOT of people on here really rate them.

These are not at all the same headphone, just superficially similar. The HD25-1 is the audiophile choice, also extremely popular with djs; the sp is far inferior and can be beat for less cash by its Audio Technica and AKG competitors.

I take it you haven't seen this thread yet? You can actually get a pair of HD25-1 II (it's the newer edition of the HD25-1 that includes velour pads and a carrying case) for around the same price that you would find HD25SP... at least in the US.
