Hey all,

Just bought a pair of 590's on the forum and I'm a little curious as to what sortof sound I'm going to get.

I went to my local high end audio store and auditioned the following.

Sennheiser HD600 - I thought these were very flat and nothing entirely special.

Sennheiser HD555 - Very comfortable and I loved the sound of these.

Sennheiser HD595 - Very comfortable and similar to the 555's, only a bit more detailed.

I'm just curious of the 590's sound more like the 555, or the 600. If they are more along the lines of the 600, I may have to propose a trade in the forums, as I really loved the 555's. I also tried searching for this, but there were mainly just comparisons between the 580 and 600... mixed comparisons so I'd like to get a better reading.

Thanks!

I would say they are definitely closer to the 555 sound than the 580/600 sound but are a bit of a different beast than either of them at the same time.

I have both the 590's and 595's and the difference in sound is that you get substantially more bass impact with the 590's, though I think it's a little less deep reaching, and you get even more treble. The mids are a bit sucked out. Now, that sounds like I'm slamming them, but there are reasons I still own them. They are the most comfortable full-sized cans I've come across and they have a fun sound. I do turn the treble down a bit though to take the edge off.

Actually, being described as "flat" is a compliment for the HD600 because the word means neutrality: i.e. there are no artificial accents like bloated bass that's inaccurate and muddy.

The HD590 sounds like the old Beyer DT531 with more bass and treble.

The HD590 is unique in being able to competently do both rock and classical
without offending either type of listener too much. The HD595 attempts to
do this and movie sound tracks too.

The 590 is like neither of those headphones. It's more forward than either the 580/600/650 series and the 5x5 series, and substantially brighter too. The high end is pronounced, and so is the bass. The midrange is left sounding a little recessed by comparison, and it has a rather nasty hollow sound with some records. This is not a good rock headphone IMO, but a very competent classical headphone and an ideal trance/techno/general electronica headphone.

It needs a whole lot of burn-in, though. Don't judge it out of the box since it will have a very different sound with 50+ hours on it.
