I am thinking of buying a nice set of cans, and I think that I`m narrowing it down. I had been considering the Grado SR 225`s but they don`t have enough sound isolation. I have since been looking at, obviously, the Senn 555 and the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro-80.

The biggest questions that I have now, are which pair will be more comfortable, and whether the better sound (I`m assuming that the Beyerdynamics have better sound) is worth the extra cost.

My taste in music is primarily classic rock, although I listen to almost everything, from rap, hiphop, r & b, to blues, bluegrass, country, classical, to metal and punk. Needless to say, very eclectic.

I appreciate your advice in this, thanks.

i don't think the hd555 beats the dt770 in any area except for midrange prominence (which can easily be remedied by a slight eq adjustment). you're comparing 2 cans in different leagues IMO. the hd555 is good for classical and some music types, it's also a good can for the price overall. however, the dt770, aside from just being a better headphone, is much better suited to your music tastes in general (rap, hip hop, r&b). they're gonna give you enough bass, but the hd555, i have a feeling, won't.

the hd555 and dt770 are both very comfortable. both about the same but the hd555 is lighter.

also if you want isolation, take another point off the hd555...they're open cans.

x2 on everything Shahrose said, expect that during my limited time with the hd555, I found them to be more comfortable(cooler), probably due to their open nature. That's just my experience though, =]

the audio acoustica A900's may also suit. Closed phones. I don't own any but have similar taste in music to you and they were recommended strongly by users of this and other forums

the 555s wont give you any more isolation than the sr225.

So what cans in the $150-$200 range would be a good buy, and are efficient?

Actually, the HD-595 would Sennheiser's offering in that price range, which has very similar traits to the HD-555.

You should take a look at the Audio-Technica A900. It's closed, about $200, and thought very highly of.

Does this mean that it would be better than the 770`s?

You will get a little bigger soundstage, less recessed mids and a lot less bass. They also don't isolate as well as DT770pro. They sound good unamped and even out of low powered flash DAPs you can crank it up really loud.

So if you like bass then no, DT770pro wins.
